Star Wars: Episode IX will begin filming August 1 at Londons Pinewood Studios, with Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant joining the main cast that will also include Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian as had been tipped.
Disney and Lucasfilm also said the role of Leia Organa will be played by Carrie Fisher, using previously unreleased footage shot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Fisher, at the core of the iconic franchise since 1977s original film with Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford and who appeared in 2017s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, died in December 2016.
We desperately loved Carrie Fisher, said director J.J. Abrams in announcing the news on StarWars.com. Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast, or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie [Lourd], we have found a way to honor Carries legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII.
Abrams directs the script he co-wrote with Chris Terrio.
The main cast from The Last Jedi is also back, Lucasfilm and Disney confirmed: Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyongo, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo and Lourd.
John Williams, who has scored every chapter in the Star Wars saga, will also return.
The film has a December 20, 2019 release date.
When they killed off Han Solo they destroyed the franchise
No one said Luke is dead and I still think they could really save this franchise if they reveal that Luke had saved Han Solo.
Bingo.
It’s nice to see Carrie Fischer back, but her acting seems a bit stiff.
I wonder if Finn is Lando’s son.
>>When they killed off Han Solo they destroyed the franchise<<
It was lost from the first frame of Ep 7. The grave was pissed on by Ep 8.
Ep 9 will be the funeral.
I squirmed my way through 7 and 8. Dissatisfying. Thought Rogue One was an unexpected pleasure. People I trust say Solo is good too. I will eventually watch it.
It’s dead, Jim.
Autopsy showed she had traces of 5 or more recreational drugs in her blood when she died.
But other than the first three I've had absolutely no interest in the "franchise".
Please. No more. Please.
Who cares? Social Justice crap drove a stake through it's heart. It is now just a zombie.
When they made women into Uber Warriors they killed the franchise.
It was crap when they had teddy bears defeat a Star Drive Empire. Everything after that was exponentially increasing levels of crap.

I was following the characters, not the backdrop of a very thinly veiled Vietnam war.
But many agree SW peaked in Empire.
I can tolerate another episode only if Darth Vader is in it. If not, forget it.
The story line will go like this. In a rare moment of lucidity Luke sees Han being impaled by his sons lite saber (same flavor less calories). He puts Han in a Jedi stasis field that looks and smells like a evicerated taun taun and upon his own demise crawls in with him until Yoda and Obiwoan get get them out.
No worse than the Disney crappola.
