There used to be many songs in popular music that featured the word Bell. Which songs do YOU recall with that word in the title? For most people, the sound of a bell signified the moment something of great significance is happening. Two such examples include A. The Bells, as performed by Laura Nyro and Patti Labelle & the Bluebelles. from 1971. The song "The Bells" was written by Marvin Gaye and Iris Gordy, for the group The Originals. Laura and Patti Labelle do a fantastic take on it in the album called "It's Gonna Take A Miracle".
When I want to bring my spirits up, I listen to an album like this one. Other redos on that album include, "I met him on a Sunday. by The Shirelles, You Really Got a Hold on Me, by Smokey Robinson, and Jimmy Mack by Martha & the Vandellas. Both women are examples of pure talent and showmanship. Back then, long before Lady Marmalade, no one knew how big Labelle would become as a group. Here, they act soley as hired backup singers. Even in this understated role, Labelle gives it their all. Tricky harmonizing, gospel deliveries and just enough not to overwhelm the lead, Laura, who had a much more delicate voice.
B. Michael Oldfields :Tubular Bells.is another example. It's from the movie The Exorcist. Once you have heard it in context, you won't forget it. I'll let another poster analyze that classic album. It remains haunting to this very day.
Tubular Bells. It’s a long one.
Book of Love - “Tubular Bells”
There were bells
On the hill
But I never heard them ringing
No, I never heard them at all
Til I met you
Sorry about the multiple posts!
I kept getting a blank white screen when I pressed ‘Post’.
I didn’t know it was taking.
Oh, wait. Did you mean good songs?
Three Bells by “The Browns”.
I recall hearing Paul McCartney sing that song. And he sang it very well. I was certain that he had written it, but no, that song was from a movie that came out years before he recorded it. The song is similar to some of his best original music,
such as Here, There & Everywhere.
I walked into a Walgreens last week, and when I passed by the toy section, that song “Ring My Bell” kept playing.
It was a good dance song back in the day.
I could never figure out which toy or display it was coming from, so I kept moving.
That happens at Halloween and Christmas.
Did not know that song was from a movie. Also thought it was a Lennon/McCartny thing,
Carol of the Bells especially the old Andre’s Champagne ads
One Less Bell to Answer
Nah, I prefer the original by Mike Oldfield. I actually have the LP:
AC/DC Hell’s Bells
English version (not a translation) of #15
I used to have a Xmas album with Dianne Carroll singing
“Silver Bells”. She had/has a very good voice.
Anna Maria Alberghetti was also on that album.
