Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson erased approximately 20,000 of his tweets days after Disney fired Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn over offensive online remarks.
Johnson explained on Twitter that he wasnt deleting his tweets under any official directive, but was preemptively destroying ammunition in the event right-wing trolls try digging them up to ruin his career.
No official directive at all, and I dont think Ive ever tweeted anything that bad, Johnson tweeted. But its nine years of stuff written largely off the cuff as ephemera, if trolls scrutinizing it for ammunition is the new normal, this seems like a why not? move.

#TheLastJedi director @RianJohnson deleted 20,000 tweets... so you probably know what that means by now. https://www.themarysue.com/rian-johnson-deleted-tweets/ pic.twitter.com/PjT90HQvg8

In wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, Hollywoods zero tolerance mentality has started applying to offensive statements as well. Gunns controversial firing came shortly after Amy Powell was ousted as head of Paramount TV for allegedly making racially charged remarks about African-American women. Weeks earlier, ABC canceled its revival of Roseanne when series star Roseanne Barr tweeted racist comments about former White House adviser Valerie Jarrett.
Gunn has since apologized for his tweets and said he understands the business decisions involved with his firing.
My words of nearly a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative, Gunn said. I have regretted them for many years since not just because they were stupid, not at all funny, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they dont reflect the person I am today or have been for some time.
Johnson said hes been using apps such as TweetDelete to mass erase Tweets, rather than go through each one individually.
I’m sure they still exist.
What goes on the Internet STAYS on the Internet...................
20,000 tweets? That seems like a lot of tweets. I have to admit I do not tweet.
About time. This has always been a staple of the left-wing.
Rian Johnson has been trolling Star Wars fans ever since ‘The Last Jedi’ bellyflopped with them.
He is confusing autistics with trolls. Autistics search for truth, trolls further an agenda and doesn’t depend on the truth.
When leftists do it theyre fighting for social justice.
When conservatives do it theyre trolls.
Gotta love the horrid bias in the article.
Years ago, I read somewhere that everything that went through Twitter would be recorded in the Library of Congress. Now, I could have misread that, or it could have only applied to certain people, or whatever. That said, there’s almost certainly a record out there of what this guy felt was so potentially dangerous he needed to delete it.
Revisionist history to be sure.
Wipe it with a cloth, butthurt Hillary voters.
I dont like it when anybody loses their job to troll mobs. But the left started this plague on humanity, and what goes around comes around.
It could be as simple as backing one position while hunky marvey Obama was advocating it but snearing and wagging his tongue if Trump did the same thing
Stalinists believe that history begins anew every day.
Yup
“in the event right-wing trolls try digging them”
Waaaaaa! I still remember Speaker Newt having his cell phone conversations intercepted and published by left wing hacks. The left has been doing this to their opponents literally for decades. F this guy.
Perhaps. But as someone who is not a Stalinist, I would rather see people lose their job over how the Last Jedi destroyed a good movie franchise than over some idiotic tweets someone made. Lots of dumb college kids might say stupid Marxist stuff online before they grow out of it. And even if they dont, as long as they do a good job at their work, I think they should be allowed to have dumb opinions without having their career destroyed.
What we call Orwellian revisionist history is really Stalinist revisionist history.
George Orwell wrote 1984 and Animal Farm about the Western European Stalinists who absolutely refused to recognize the horrible things Stalin had done to his people.
Whether the director is a practicing Marxist is beside the point. He uses the tactics of the Stalinists. Destroy all evidence and admit nothink.
Gunn apparently wrote his offensive attempt at edgy humor after his disgust at being in the presence of an actual known pedophile at a gathering. No evidence, as far as I know, of Mr. Gunn being an actual pedophile himself. But he should have deleted those tweets long ago before somebody decided to rummage through them.
I remember this also.
At any rate, internet is essentially forever. Deletion is only a band aid if one is fearful of internet stuff.
Mainly a bunch of childish “the force is female” and “you crybabies don’t like women” among other delusional crap from the world’s most spherical head.
It begins the morning after their last failure.
