A California coastal city has become the latest municipality to ban plastic straws, enacting what is potentially the strictest plastic prohibition in the country.
Santa Barbara earlier this month passed the ordinance authorizing hefty fines and even a possible jail sentence for violators who dole out plastic straws at restaurants, bars and other food establishments.
According to the ordinance, violators on their first offense will be given a written warning notice. But the second time a purveyor of plastic straws defies the ban is when the heavy hand of the law could clamp down.
In that case, the ordinance cites penalties from the city’s municipal code for a “fine not exceeding one thousand dollars ($1,000), imprisonment for a term not exceeding six (6) months.”

If I understand, it will be the same level of offense (misdemeanor) as knowingly infecting someone with AIDS.
So you can stand on a sidewalk and shoot up heroin, toss the syringe and needle to the ground and then take a dump on it and nothing will happen to you. But heaven forbid you use a straw.
On Hilton Head Island, my favorite restaurant only will give you a plastic straw “by request”. Ever try to drink a tall ice tea without a straw and with plenty of ice and not spill it all over yourself? Well, you can buy 300 “PAPER” individually wrapped “jumbo” straws at Amazon for $14.99 on PRIME. Got ‘em. Put them in the car and whenever I go out to eat there now ... I have a straw. And they’ve made such a big deal out of it, that if you have a straw, people “point!” I told them I cut my tips in half to cover the price of the straws. Fun to play with their heads.

We have a close friend with cerebral palsy. She MUST have a straw to drink.
Will she now have to buy a “Negative Air Pressure Liquid Transfer Device - AMA & ADA compliant”, with specified data plate attached, before eating outside the confines of her own home?
How long will it take to get one of these through the FDA Clinical Trials?

Totalitarians are always like this. Penalties that seem disproportionate to the offense are actually penalties for defying the power of the state. It isn’t about straws, it’s about the ability of some snotty little government droog to tell you you can’t use straws.

Soft drinks - or at least large ones
Toys in McDonald’s Happy Meals
Straws
Styrofoam
Guns
Plastic bags
The Confederate battle flag

A really cool prank would be to take a small private plane, load it to the gills with plastic straws, and drop all of them over the city hall and downtown area.
Then—fly away fast before the Luftwaffe catches you. :-)
