One even still had an index card Bowers had made with the contact information of a dozen men who were interested in sexual services. “A smoking gun,” Tyrnauer calls it. One of the men on the card was still alive, and confirmed Bowers’ stories to Tyrnauer, too. All of this was in addition to the work a team of researchers did to fact check many of Bowers’ anecdotes.

Gore Vidal ended up being an important source for Tyrnauer, who counts the famed writer as a personal friend. Vidal was a client and then friend of Bowers, but his “very active carnal life,” as Tyrnauer calls it, wasn’t included in Bowers’s book. The reason: Vidal was still alive.
They intentionally excluded living persons from the book. Yet, some came forward.

Believable. The studio system of the time was completely set up for it. If you were a bankable star the studio didn't care what you were up to in private and would put all it's hollywood magic and media control into creating a wholesome image of you and then defending that image regardless of what tawdry business you were into. And they had the clout to do it. Arrested with a teenage boy? Buried. Found with a dead girl? Forgotten.
And if history has taught us anything, it's that gays that don't fear consequences or judgement do some really creepy things.

I was always taught that David was a great king when I was young. It seemed that his story ended with the story of david and Bathsheba.
Not till later did churches begin to emphasize that he was a terrible father. they explained how the stories that followed david and Bathsheba were an outworking of the prophet’s oracle over david that the sword would never leave his house —though he himself would be saved.
