97 infected by norovirus at Maine beach, according to CDC

“It’s highly contagious, so it would appear that there’s a human element there, that somebody had it and was at the beach,” said Bob Peabody, Bridgton's town manager.

“I think the message is, if you’re sick or your children are sick, don’t go to the beach,” he added.

The beach had already closed on July 6 after several people became ill with abdominal symptoms, but reopened on July 10.

Tests performed then showed acceptable levels of E. coli in the lake but not in water from two bathroom sinks. The sinks have since been removed and replaced with hand sanitizers.

Brighton is not a prime vacation spot for our foreign friends. I don’t think it really has a public beach. It is over an hour from Portland.

I can’t believe I misspelled Bridgton no e or h. I know exactly where this beach, is which is well off the beaten path Woods Pond’s problem is that it is to small to serve as a public beach. Does not appear to have good inlet and outlet so the water stagnates. That is the definition of a pond. I thought this was in Denmark Maine until I just looked it up.

Exactly. Many of the "ponds" in south-central ME are damned streams, which have regular flow. This one must have something, but aerial map shows no active streams and roads nearly around the circumference, which would inhibit water flow.

Also, many of these lakes have public beaches, so not surprised that it was contaminated. It's a big deal in these lakes to limit exposure to out of state boats and populations. Such is our lake, which has strong in and out flow and limited public access.

Appears that it was in the bathroom sinks not the lake.

Maine does not have ‘beaches’ unless you consider laying on rocks being at the beach.....
