Oddly, I recall an article by Elmer Keith, maybe 50 years ago. He suggested that police cars have a round opening in their windshield which could be opened so the cops could shoot through it.
I thought it was crazy but maybe not.

Sounds like something that would have been in Roy Doty's Wordless Workshop, which appeared each month in Popular Science 50 years ago.
