After watching yachts sailing up and down the river, from my LowCountry condo, I wondered how many of the sailors might be retirees living on board. Started researching the subject.
The article described foreign destinations, but the USA would be my preference. Any senior FReepers already doing this?

That was my dream. Until my anchor put an end to it. She doesn’t like boats.

I have thought about this but I think I would prefer a luxury yacht.

How much do they suck off of you with property taxes?

After a couple of months, I would be bored to death.

“Youve just weighed anchor on another night of bliss, lulled to sleep by the gentle rocking of your sailboat in the calm sea. Before you is a small cove lined by craggy cliffs. Clear blue waters end at a white-sand beach. Youve had it all to yourself for the last week.
It was supposed to be just an overnight stop. But it was so beautiful, you decided to stick around. After a quick dip, youre enjoying a cup of coffee and a light breakfast on deck as you contemplate which island paradise youll go to next.”
And then you hang yourself.

Two things boats are good for: 1) a hole in the water to throw money into and 2) a nasty way to die if you don’t know what you’re doing.

What kind of narrow attitude is that? If you stick to the USA, you'll miss out on dealing with these guys (and it's not fishing rods they're holding):

At one point, that was on my list of retirement "locations". The glitch in the problem is that I know too much about boat/ship maintenance and repair costs. OTOH, what
could work is to buy a house on/near the intracoastal waterway and spend most of your summer slowly touring the coast, with an occasional jaunt out to the Bahamas.
On the third hand....now that I have discovered flying, my plan is to build a small plane and spend most days in the air......

Not a fan myself, get dizzy from the motion.
But boats are cheaper than houses and you can easily trade them in for an upgrade - no realtor commission, land/property taxes!!!
Have to stop now, there’s a thunderstorm overhead and the river movement is making me dizzy. LOL!!

Maybe a houseboat and access to the inland waterway?

I have family members who do this... they rent out their house and live on their boat. When they get bored they sail off to South America or someplace... I agreed to keep their birds for the first two years since birds can be very noisy on a sailboat. So far they love it. Works for them - works for me. Another couple in the family did the same thing - even before they retired. They loved the lifestyle.

Yes they do. If a boat is your home, you have maintenance on it. It’s far different in the way from taking a cruise.
