The Minnesota Department of Corrections confirms a corrections officer at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Stillwater died after an assault by an offender Wednesday afternoon.
A release stated Joseph Gomm was attacked in an industry building around 1:30 p.m. He was rushed to Regions Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Gomm had been with the department for 16 years.
Sources confirmed the identity of the offender as Edward Muhammad Johnson. Johnson is serving a sentence for homicide, according to DOC records.
Sources also confirmed Johnson attacked Gomm with a hammer.
At a press conference Wednesday afternoon, DOC Commissioner Tom Roy said Johnson has yet to be interviewed by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. "We believe for the first time in our history we have lost a corrections officer to violence in our institution at Stillwater," he said.
He said the BCA had arrived on the scene. He added the facility was placed on lockdown.
According to the DOC website, the facility in Stillwater is the state's largest close-security institution for adult male felons. DOC records show 527 inmates with active sentences for homicide at Stillwater. Roy said the department was in mourning.
"The corrections family is reeling from this incident," Roy said. "We are not accustomed to losing staff." He added, "Officer Gomm was a fine man doing honorable work."

I put coal into the power plant at Sandstone Prison, a federal pen in S. Minnesota years ago. The plant was one very scary place.
Our first few tons hit the grates but we couldn’t get the stuff to ignite.
Only rags, diesel fuel and hand torches...over and over, the stuff would not fire.
A convict came into the power plant and wanted to know why there was no heat or hot water for the mid day meal...”we got 350 hungry ‘cons’ upstairs.”
My gruff old fuel engineer looked at the guy and said, “What are your worried about? They ain’t going no where...”
New York had a death penalty several times. The last time was when Pataki was elected...then it was eliminated in 2007.
Three things we were told you don't ever mess with were the inmate's mail, visits, or food.
Why punish yourself?
Well they can’t do anything to this guy that they haven’t already done - Life. Big deal. He killed again. Time to sue to the state/government/governor, etc for letting this INEVITABLY HAPPEN.
Kill Bill 2, pluck out his other eye! We used to call him Patch, now we call him Patches!
“I like when you kill someone and go to prison for live and kill someone there and now what, nada, nothing.”
If it’s any consolation (for anyone!) they moved him to MN’s only Super Max.
He now gets one hour a day out of his box.
Did you read this guy’s life? His parents were both Chicago Cops. Mom Cop filed for divorce. Dad Cop shot her 8 times, then killed himself - in front of this future perp.
Then he went on to a life of crime and murder. Life has so little meaning for some.
