I can understand getting rid of defects, susceptibility to diseases or genetic conditions, etc. I can even see getting rid of some bad genes that don’t cause disease but which are harmful....eg soft tooth enamel which runs in my family.

I’m a lot more leery of “improvements”. What if a boy is going to grow to a max height of 5’2’ and by tweaking something you can change that to 5’10’? I have no doubt that would help him with women, with job prospects etc. it would enhance his quality of life. Where does it stop though?

“morally permissible”

What informs their morality? Just curious.

A very, very slippery slope. We don't even know why the vast majority of people who develop hypertension have it. Not all things genetic are controlled by a single gene, or a few genes. Trying to genetically engineer traits like intelligence, or athleticism, etc. is not straightforward, and the ethical concerns of this are mind-boggling. Decisions on things like this should not be made by university-trained ethicists.

Leach Scully said. In the event that the law is changed, gene editing of human embryos should be considered on a case-by-case basis by the fertility regulator, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, the report adds.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department of Health in the United Kingdom. It is a statutory body that regulates and inspects all clinics in the United Kingdom providing in vitro fertilisation (IVF), artificial insemination and the storage of human eggs, sperm or embryos. It also regulates human embryo research.

Of course, on a case by case basis.

Which of course means if you have the money and the political connections, by all means we can design a baby for you.

They didn’t wait for all the evidence for this crap. Just read this this morning.

“CRISPR gene editing produces unwanted DNA deletions”

DNA-cutting enzyme used for genetic modification can create large deletions and shuffle genes.

snip

“The cell will try to stitch things back together,” says mouse geneticist Allan Bradley of the Wellcome Sanger Institute in Hinxton, UK, who led the study. “But it doesn’t really know what bits of DNA lie adjacent to each other.”

Researchers often use CRISPR to generate small deletions in the hope of knocking out a gene’s function. But when examining CRISPR edits, Bradley and his colleagues found large deletions — often several thousand DNA letters long — and complicated rearrangements of DNA sequences in which previously distant DNA sequences were stitched together. The phenomenon was prevalent in all three of the cell types they tested, including a kind of human cell grown in the laboratory.
