I remember the sounds of laughter from Blockbuster employees after Netflix opened.

I lost track of the video rental business. Why did video stores go.out of business?
To: ConservativeStatement
There are a few films made over the last 70+ years (Grapes of Wrath and Wizard of Oz being the oldest) that have been important enough to me to cause me to buy it...either in DVD format or Bluray format. Now,on the very, very rare occasion that I want to watch a film I borrow it from my local library network.
Blockbuster hasn't been a factor in my life since the early 90s...and even then it wasn't a big factor.

I remember when a video rental store, not sure if it was blockbuster, opened in Garden City, KS. Just about everyone was renting there.
I tried it a couple of times too.

I knew someone who opened a video rental store back in the day of beta and vhs. Went gangbusters for a couple of years, then the big boys got into the game and he closed.

I remember returning a vcr tape that I hadnt rewound 100%. Im telling you it was 98% rewound. They said I owed a $2.00 rewind fee. I told them to cram it. They were closed within 6 months.

The Onion did a parody article years ago about Blockbuster setting up stores on other planets. Funny how things can change. We also had a two-term communist muslim president in those years.

The final store will bend but not break.
Pun intended?
The closures will leave the Blockbuster in Bend, Oregon, as the sole holdout.
How exciting, said the Bend stores general manager Sandi Harding. It might end up being a little chaotic for a couple of weeks.
Wonder what Sandis business model is since she intends to stay open.

My in-laws are devastated! They dont do the high speed Netflix and Hulu thing, now all they will have is the library or purchase movies. I know there ar quite a few people around Fairbanks who are in the same boat.
