Somewhat related, I recall a science fiction story from years ago that (as a very minor plot point) mentioned a crook who managed to digitally steal a tiny fraction of a penny from each and every bank transaction in the continent of Africa (they had low tech and didn’t detect such minor losses). The guy made trillions and basically collapsed Africa.

Comes rolling in one day in a real fancy car obviously above his paygrade...kind of done him in.

Richard Pryor played a computer programmer who did that at his company, got rich and caught the attention of the bad guy who made him reprogram weather satellites to create really bad weather (yeah, it's a really dumb movie). The movie "Office Space" had a subplot about stealing that idea from Superman III to get back at the company they worked for.
