Grandma, 68, on oxygen dies after company cuts electricity due to alleged overdue bill, family says

A 68-year-old New Jersey grandmother died last week after a company shut off her electricity because of an overdue bill -- which cut off the oxygen tank she relied on to keep breathing, a family member said.

Linda Daniels, who is in hospice care, was in her Newark home on Thursday for hours after her oxygen tank and air-conditioning were shut off around 10 a.m., NJ.com reported. Her family said they were with Daniels pleading with PSE&G to turn on the electricity until the 68-year-old died just before 4:30 p.m. from heart failure.

"She was trying to catch her breath — she was gasping for air," Daniels’ granddaughter, Mia, 28, told the news site Sunday. "She suffered and she passed right in front of us. She was gasping until the time she died."

Desiree Washington, Daniels’ daughter, added that the family made “numerous calls” to the utility company, but its response came too late.

"They told us they would be rolling a truck. The truck did not come until the next day,” Washington said.

Mia added: "They started getting nasty after awhile, telling us they had too many tickets out on this.”

--snip--

He added that PSE&G did not know about Daniels’ medical condition until after the power was shut off.

“They come to the house. They are there just about every day.”

“Electric generation is not a long term solution; it is mostly for portable short term use.”

Preferred source for in-home use.

I wonder if they OD’d her on albuterol, thinking it was a substitute for O2?

But they are there every day. I am not sure I get your point. Anyway, it doesn’t matter. She is dead and her kids are stupid.

“But they are there every day. “

Previously you said just about every day. Now you say everyday. My mother was under hospice care and they did not come everyday.

When my mom was in hospice, her oxygen generator was electrically powered.

1) It’s Harbor Freight AKA Hazard Fraught. Caveat emptor.

2) You need to learn a thing or two about home medical oxygen before you go pontificating about it on a thread populated by folks who deal with it on a daily basis.

O.K. I have a special medical need so don’t cut off my power.

More involved here than meets the eye. If she was gasping for air she was dying regardless of oxygen.

Before we vilify Com -Ed why can’t these dead beats pay their utility bill?

It takes time to disconnect electric. They were likely months arrears.

The attending family should be held for negligence.

My mom is in hospice and like this lady is on oxygen. Hospice supplies an oxygen concentrator as well as backup oxygen tank(s). If this family had any issues they can call hospice 24/7 for any issue. They will respond immediately.

Her family was pleading to turn on the electricity....why didn’t they just pay the bill or invite the poor woman in the heat of summer to stay with them since she had no power? Sorry but I think the family wanted her gone.

Oxygen concentraters run on electricity. O2 companies provide oxygen by tanks, to have on hand in case of power failures. Hospice wuld have odered more, if her tanks were running low, IF they were notified. Either the family didn’t know they needed to be replaced, or they didn’t know enough to call the hospice that she was out. Sounds like the family weren’t involved enough in her care, to know the plan of care, or maybe the family members who DID know, were not present. No, the power companies are not supposed to cut power to O2 patients, but even if they do, there are always back up tanks in the home. If my family member had no power to his O2 concentrator, was out of tanks, and was gasping for breath, I would call an ambulance, wouldn’t anybody? (If they had any brains, that is).

Many use plug-in generators for in-home use....they can also recharge the portable bottles.

This smells like a try for big bucks ....why "plead with the company for hours" when an ambulance could have solved the problem until the electric deal was settled.....
