If what Manafort did was commonplace for the creatures of DC and no one else was ever held to those standards, isn't that the foundation for an affirmative defense? If the Podesta's did the same thing, or more, and they weren't prosecuted, why does he? If the Podesta's were allowed to retroactively document what they did, why can't he?
If these stories are true, about Mueller getting more DOJ lawyers to "help" with the cases, going forward, couldn't it mean that he knows this dog is riddled with fleas and he can try and let some junior DOJ lawyer take the hit when these cases blow up in their faces?
I think Special counsel Robert Mueller will wait until just before the midterms and throw out some alleged allegations in an attempt to influence the outcomes which will disappear as soon as the elections are over..

The bogus charges against Manafort have to do with his dealings with Ukraine, many years before Donald Trump came down the escalator at Trump Tower in June 2015 and announced he was a candidate for president.

Based on the history of Mueller’s attempts to get Manafort, suspect that having another swing at Manafort was Mueller primary, and perhaps only, interest in being Special Counsel. The Russian Collusion myth developed dynamically, morphing into what it has become, and Mueller jumped on board opportunistically. Otherwise I would think the Collusion Story was created as a vehicle to puruse Manafort, not the other way around.
I’ll extend your assumption a bit. Mueller’s hiring of more attorney’s is an indication (as you said) that he’s getting ready to bring cases to court in multiple jurisdictions. Could also mean he’s got nothing else. That he’s wrapping things up and getting ready to write his final report. He will no doubt re-state the Trump-Russia collusion allegations, present some heavily redacted ‘evidence’, declare the case ‘unproved’, and then ride off into his political sunset years.
The Media, Rod Rosenstein & Mueller’s investigators keep hiding behind the charactarization of the investigation as “counter-intelligence” rather than legal. In the past C-I investigations seldom see the inside of a courtroom. Evidence is seldom made public in it’s specifics.
