The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed any time-and don't have to be about gardening.
Expanded patio is just about done. Restoration of raised beds is next - Hubby's tools etc were dumped on each and every bed after I pulled garlic, harvested wheat etc. So I couldn't plant anything there and still can not until the junk is cleared away.
One of the prefab garden sheds is supposed to be delivered tomorrow. It's for the lower patio next to the green house. I have about 4 gallons of green beans to process tomorrow. We have a bunch of squash and cukes also. About 5 gallons-a little more than that.
We got a shipment from Stark Brothers. Two blueberry bushes, and a couple of pear trees - one is an Asian Pear. Both for Zone 4 IIRC. Corn is above my head, but we aren't getting as many ears as we usually do.
Totally worn out from being outside today, but I wanted to get this posted before going to bed. Have a great weekend. Prayers up for all. God Bless.
Pinging the list.
You’re right on time greeneyes...
The cold weather plants, potatoes, turnips, mustard greens and collard greens are doing well. Night time temperatures are starting to be over 50F so beans and tomatoes are starting to grow. Hoping the chipmunks do not wipe out my beans this year. I planted more beans than I need hoping half make it with out being eaten.
LOL. Toothpicks holding my eyes open-feels later than it is.
Well that’s progress with the 50 degree nights. Things are looking up I think.
We are having some of the most wonderful weather in the 70 years I have lived here on Humboldt Bay. I hope the Fourth of July holiday was as grand for you as it was for us. We had all of our family here for some great Grillin & Chillin. Anyone else ever grilled fresh oyster along with the usual Hamburgers & Hot Dogs...
We had a wonderful lazy day. Didn’t do zip. We had no effort picnic - That’s Johnsonville smoked brats-precooked. Just throw in a crock pot. Zap bun in toaster oven when hungry.
Organic Doritos, fresh veggies and dip, watermelon and blueberries with cream-everyone just gets what they want when they want. Easy.
Picked our first winter squash this morning. 15lbs.

Blueberries are finally done. Lots of baby white crookneck and pumpkins setting every day. Rice looking good as are maters. Lots of baby romas setting and cherry tomatoes too. Liberty apples getting closer to ripe every day. Having to soaker hose more than I’d like but it is what it is.
We have a very short growing season here at 8,500 ft elevation in the Colorado Rockies. Many years I never get a tomato before the first fall freeze. I started plants indoors very early and have two tomatoes in containers I can bring indoors if there is a forecast freeze. I think our freeze-free time is only about 90 days. Challenging.
I’m on a Doritos and Salsa kick at least twice a day
Wow, that looks incredible! My garden is just starting to grow. Temps got down to 37F not long ago. Some in my garden not affected, some stopped growing.
Our night time lows are around 50 to 52 and our day time highs are 62 to 68
Our night time lows have been in the low 40s but, now are in the lower 50s at last for the last two weeks.
here in the north country, where it was 59 in the house the other day, the temps have suddenly turned up into the high 80's and so far in our garden we've enjoyed loose leaf lettuce and fresh dill and a little onion planted LAST year but just came up this year....
fresh dill in a salad is outstanding...
tomatoes coming a long...hops are growing...had a few strawberries and raspberries, and the bluberries are getting there...
We start our winter squash in those cardboard drink holder thingies in early April. Hubby gets them from the break room at work over the course of the year. Just put a cupcake liner in each drink hole and fill with potting soil. Voila, ‘free’ peat pots. Use kitchen shears to separate them when you get ready to plant and make sure you cover the edges with soil completely so it doesn’t wick moisture away from your seedlings when you transplant them.
Dill is delicious. Lettuce is long gone here but second season planting dates are approaching. Fall Chinese cabbage and lettuce is delicious!
LOL, our lows have been in the mid/upper 70’s for the past couple of weeks. High of 96 or 97 one day last week.
Totally cute!
Totally stinky!
Great news in central Texas, we had scattered showers off and on yesterday and an inch of rain today! 2 rain barrels are full but I’d knocked the other 2 off kilter at some point and they’re only about half full. I amended that situation before dark and it sure feels like we may get another shower tonight. I’m still getting a few tomatoes and lots of squash and peppers. My lemon tree still looks sickly but its put out some new growth. I still think our oddball windy summer is the culprit there. Peaches, figs and pomegranates are close to being ripe so I’ll be eating happy and processing those soon.
God bless you all. Greeneyes it is wonderful hearing how well all your new things are coming along. May God continue to keep everything going smoothly and on time.
