I am always reminded of “The Crucible” by Henry Miller. Ostensibly about the Salem Witch Trials of 1692, Miller was obviously commenting against McCarthyism in the 1950s.
In the play, young hysterical girls keep pointing at people (almost always women) and claiming that they are witches. The community, and the judge, take this seriously and imprison or kill a number of people.
Until the girls point to the wife of the judge.
Instantly: “These young hysterical girls have gone too far. They must stop their childish gameplaying. There are no witches. Anyone can see that. Everyone can go home. Just walk away. This game is over. Sorry about the dead people.”
Except that McCarthy was right.
