China and Australia have joined the search for 12 boys missing in a Thai cave, as divers on Sunday closed in on the spot where they believe the teens are sheltering.

The international rescue operation -- which includes over 1,000 people from Thai emergency services, the US Military and British cave experts -- has been ramping up its efforts since the boys and their 25-year-old soccer coach disappeared during an outing in the caves in northern Thailand eight days ago.

Divers are now closing in on the spot where they believe the missing boys are sheltering in the Tham Luang Nang Non cave system.

The elevated dry area, called Pattaya Beach, is several kilometers from the entrance of the cave.

Water from the flooded cave has receded in recent days, allowing rescue teams to gain ground, according to Chiang Rai province governor Narongsak Osatanakorn.

Oxygen tanks have been installed at 25-meter junctures for divers to use, and a water pumping machine has also being deployed, added Osatanakorn

Dreadful——and what on earth would make a coach take kids to a known dangerous place like this.

Oxygen tanks?

Are they using rebreathers or does the author not SCUBA knowledgeable?

Eight days ago? I hope their "sheltering" and that they carried some food. I wonder how long this adventure was supposed to last.

SE Asia is filled with caves. I’ve been to many in Laos where you can walk back and around for at least 1/2 mile. I wouldn’t be hard to get lost or the group separated if they were in one that went further. There are holes where a misstep could be disastrous. In other words, they can be very dangerous. And possible they found one where they got lost. This one is close to the Mekong, so add water to that and it becomes extremely dangerous.

Rising water is the bane of cavers.
Always check the weather forecasts.

Did a lot of spelunking as a young man.

Eight days is do able if they kept their heads
and had enough drinking water and managed to keep
above it.

Reading the entire article it’s apparent some unbelievably bad judgment and recklessness went into this misadventure. Well, unless they were all just swallowed up by some unseen sinkhole outside the cave system. Maybe a miracle will occur.

It was a 3 hourtour.

Where was there mention of a tour? This doesn't sound like a tour.

For reasons unknown, the boys and their coach ventured on, deeper into the cave network, past signs that warn people not to enter during the rainy season, which usually begins in July.
