Comcast says cut fibers triggered nationwide outage and may impact other providers

Comcast said Friday that the hours-long interruption of its internet, video and voice services, was caused two separate and unrelated fiber cuts to the company's large network providers. The company is working to restore services.

“We identified two, separate and unrelated fiber cuts to our network backbone providers. Our engineers worked to address the issue immediately and services are now being restored to business and residential internet, video and voice customers. We again apologize to anyone who was impacted.”

The company did not specify which providers were impacted.

A source told CNBC that one of the cuts occurred in CenturyLink's network.

With “by” being the missing word.

It is a glaring mistake that stops the reader dead.

How you can read this:

How can you not see anything wrong with that?

If you live close to a town where there are TV towers, even the cheapest little devices, even the flat mats you hang on the wall will work alright. If you live a little further out you might have to spend a little more money (typically about $30). You can get one of the amplified directional antennas with a motorized mount. They are a gaudy looking, cheaply made and designed to have a life span measured in months. Here is a link to the last that one I bought:

If you get a Digital Converter Box w/TV Recording, you can have your complete Redneck TIVO type experience without paying the cable companies a dime. You can even continue using your old TV.

I just bought that same antenna a month ago. I can get the weak transmitter 55 miles away that has 4 stations with old shows/movies from the 50s-80s, MeTV etc but I can’t get the stronger transmitters 75 miles away in the exact same direction which has the main networks abc/cbs/nbc/fox.

pisses me off. 150 miles my arse. I’m going to try to get it higher in the air and see if that helps but I think I just need a big yagi antenna. Same design but 4-5 times the size.

I live in the country on 8+ acres, and would happily sign a 5 year deal with Comcast if they’d put high speed internet out here.

No cable, and the telco (Frontier) won’t bother to put in ADSL, or whatever is after that, because there’s not enough home density out here.

I get it’s an investment, but rural high speed internet is a huge issue that needs to be addressed. I don’t have the million dollars to get the telco to put in routers, nor to run fiber to my house (approximately 1 mile away).

I get a blazing 1.73 Mb download (per speedtest.net).

(Note - I actually worked for Roadrunner, when they were acquired by Time Warner, and have 20+ years experience on enterprise routers, switches, firewalls, VPN, and wireless gear.)

I am sure that you realize that there are a number of factors that responsible for your reception difficulties. These are combinations of distance, terrain, and electromagnetic interference. And unfortunately the FCC licenses stations for the most part to have a 60 mile range. If they have a superior location for their broadcasting tower then in general the power that they are licensed to use is reduced. HDTV stations broadcast in the UHF spectrum. The power required to get the same range is much higher than what VHF TV stations used to broadcast at and this is calculated more precisely so unfortunately the signal peters out more abruptly in fringe areas.

You are probably going to have to do some research to figure out what is working for other people with similar reception issues and even then something that works for your neighbor 2 miles away might not work for you. So I would advise strongly to not purchase anything that cannot be returned fairly easily.

Anything you antenna you pay $30 for like this is made in China, the quality control is probably questionable, the claims are exaggerated and you should only buy from a source that accepts returns. That antenna has been working for us but if you are in a fringe area there is no guarantee that it will work for you.
