I posted upthread. Although I am a pilot, I had basic medic training in the IDF (it’s like a six week course).
There was and event, resulting in a similar injury.
I did the finger thing, and then someone had duct tape and a oval rock that worked until the person got to the hospital.
I consider duct tape a critical part of a real first aid kit now.

A family member had an incident somewhat similar recently, complete with severed arteries. Thankfully another family member, a first responder, was RIGHT THERE when it happened or bleed out would have occurred rapidly.

I've not seen many pictures of the Brazilian carnival. The ones I've seen look like RuPaul and his friends having a night out.

If anyone is ever witness to such horrible tragedy, you can save the persons life!
A towel on the wound will help very little considering the volume and pressure.
You have to reach into the wound and tightly PINCH the vein. The head/neck have several alternative routes for blood flow.

Same thing happened here in central Florida. A lady was holding 2 wine glasses riding in a golf cart. The cart turned and she went flying into the street...in top of the glasses.

Might be nice if stuff like that was actually taught in school.

As far as I know only doctors or combat medics are taught this.
I learned it obliquely and by deduction...I have a carotid artery completely blocked and another that has been rootered out.
Amazed that my blood flow to the brain was uninterrupted, I asked the doc.
It should be part of every first aid certification course.

I'm a non-clinical person at a small rural clinic system. All the staff had to take a first aid course.
I was surprised how little we learned about first aid beyond "yell for help" and "call 911". Granted, if we're at work, we'd be surrounded by trained clinical staff. But if something happens at home out in the woods, we're basically screwed because we still don't know diddly.
