As far as I know only doctors or combat medics are taught this.

I learned it obliquely and by deduction...I have a carotid artery completely blocked and another that has been rootered out.

Amazed that my blood flow to the brain was uninterrupted, I asked the doc.

It should be part of every first aid certification course.

I'm a non-clinical person at a small rural clinic system. All the staff had to take a first aid course.

I was surprised how little we learned about first aid beyond "yell for help" and "call 911". Granted, if we're at work, we'd be surrounded by trained clinical staff. But if something happens at home out in the woods, we're basically screwed because we still don't know diddly.
