Blocks, Lincoln logs, legos, erector set, darts, bb gun, pellet gun, .22 LR bolt action rifle, Tonka truck, sturdy tricycle, bike, Frisbee, balls, real tools (screwdriver, wrench, knife, file, hammer, sandpaper, paintbrush, soldering iron, etc.), dolls and doll houses (girls only), plus whatever interested them that was not a fad. My big rule was no batteries or other electricity unless the kid used solder and made it himself/herself.
I was Steam Punk before steam punk was cool. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZVYajwO42c Still have these, a Stirling engine, and a small manufacturing accessory. Chemistry set, and don’t skimp. Erector set, also don’t skimp. The steam and or Stirling Engine can run what your mind comes up with. For dad/son toys a tether car. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBCs8Nn_2lk
