Everyone has a memory of their favorite toys they grew up with. Which toy or toys do you think every child should grow up without? GI Joes for boys? A doll for girls? what do you think?
Legos are a hit with pretty much every child, but you need to have a huge supply of generic Legos of all kinds in a big wide container, with lots of little and big platforms, lots of wheels, roofing, etc, so they are building their own imagination vehicles and structures. The kits are of limited interest.
Open ended toys like art supplies and paper, scissors, clay, play dough, etc should be available.
Interactive figures of the child’s choice and some generics are very good for acting out imaginary scenes. Dolls, animals, action figures, ponies, whatever they like.
When did it start being "junk?"
A huge hit here is still all sizes of cardboard boxes. She built her own room by room dollhouse with them and decorated the rooms herself. She uses little boxes to make animals, or big ones as clubhouses for herself.

Older toys are still great, others already covered those I was going to name. My two year old grandson just got a spring horse for his birthday and he loves it as much as kids used to. I am also a big fan of art materials of all sorts.
Of the newer toys I really like the magnetic blocks. My grand kids have a ton of fun with those. Legos I like- not new but didn’t have those until my kids were little.
When I was a kid I did not have toys and did not miss them. We were expected to work on the ranch if there was work to do. I had a paint horse I could just go ride anytime and anywhere I wanted to go. I also had a .22 rifle and went rabbit hunting a lot with my brothers. Our house was full of books and I became a serious bookworm. My mother tried to interest me in dolls and got me a Chatty Kathy but I left her in the corrals and the horses didn’t do her any good.
Oh my I said I didn’t have toys when I was a kid but I sure had a sling shot.
As a collector of Lionel trains (Standard and O gauge ), accessories, and old catalogs,and long standing member of the TRAIN ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA, I do know what I'm talking about.

I was raised during World War II, many toys were made of wood. My dad saved money buy making toys for me out of wood and cardboard. I had a Knight’s sword and shield. My grand father made me a wooden revolver. Dad also made tanks and boats out of wood. My most played with was probably the toy soldiers that were 10 cents a piece at Woolworth. I had to be real good to get them. OH! I went to a clinic for some medical tests and afterwards I got a Roy Rodgers cap gun for going there. Wow, wasn’t life grand back then? Sorry most of you missed it.

We shouldn’t be like the left & raise kids like lab rats. Let them have fun once in awhile.
Chemistry kit when I was 11 or 12. Oh the memories of slides and red dye and of making a test tube out of a light bulb.
For my children:
Kicking them out of the house for at least two hours a day to wander in our five acre back yard.
Full access to the pile of wood and construction material
Pellet guns
paint ball guns
bicycles
bows
But what seems to have been the best - the electronics construction kits. All five did things with them.
Steam power? Yes.
Chemistry set? I’d guess it’s very hard to find a good chemistry set these days.
