Anyone believing The Eagles’ music represents anything Conservative is delusional. Glenn Frey and Don Henley are both Alan Cranston supporting left wing radicals.
Looking back on the song, my take was that California was very alluring/appealing.
Boy has that changed.
(they lyrics are clever...the guitar work mesmerizing)
Eagles have seen better days.
Weird that the song is by mostly left wingers. Writing on the wall? What writing? They can never leave. We call it velvet handcuffs.
After One of These Nights, I was hoping for more similar hits. To say I was disappointed with Hotel California would be an understatement... It was almost as devastating as hearing Leon Russell had changed over to Country & Western Music, which I got over eventually.
The Eagles. lefties but great music.
The cult of scientology.
On a related note, a Priest recently observed of rock lyrics:
“Stairway to Heaven and Highway to Hell are reflective of the traffic patterns in each direction.”
I thought it was just a cobbled together collection of random scrawls from a couple of guys who were high. Kinda like most of Elton John's stuff. Let me check again. Yep, still leaning "random scrawls".
I have to admit: I’ve never paid one bit of attention to the lyrics. Because guitar solo.
As far as “Hotel California” is concerned being hard of hearing to the point of being called deaf by some is a benefit.
I wrote my own lyrics to the song:
Welcome to the Desert of Arizona
On a dark desert highway, full moon in the sky
I was looking like the Wolf man, like that Lon Chaney guy
But my name is really Howard, H-o-w-a-r-d H-u-g-h-e-s
I was looking for a fix, maybe airplane glue
A flat truck pulled over, with seven girls inside,
Two wanted to stone me, three to give me a ride
Relax, said a beauty, We aim to please
Were headed for Winslow
A place youll never leave
Welcome to Winslow, Arizona
Not a Sinatra place
With a Rat Pack face
Were living it up in Winslow, Arizona
Its a cartel place
With a Tex-Mex face
Im perpetually twisted, Mercedes Benzedrine
Its a fast German company, with pretty fast machines
But they dont give me needles, they dont give me Meth
They give me a Horse with no name, Americas best
We stopped in Winslow, I escaped the lass
Went to see Joe-Joe in Tucson
To buy some Californian grass
But the desert over took me, with peyote seeds
Its there that I met Melvin, I was in terrible need
Melvin gave me a ride, playing some Eagle songs
I had a peaceful easy feeling, so I sang along
We saw a tequila sunrise, and I got the itch real bad
Im giving Melvin my millions, maybe he can be glad
Welcome to the desert in Arizona
Its a Castaneda place
With a Yaqui face
Living it up in the desert of Arizona
Youll remember your name
If you dont go insane
Don Henley’s ‘Garden of Allah” is a better representation of the decay of America.
Plus the video of the same song has a appearance of Kirk Douglas as the Devil.
It was a pretty big year for fashion
A lousy year for rock and roll
The people gave their blessing to crimes of passion
It was a dark, dark night of the collective soul
I was somewhere out on Riverside
By the El Royale Hotel
When a stranger appeared in a cloud of smoke
I thought I knew him all too well
He said, “Now that I have your attention
I got somethin` I wanna say
You may not wanna hear it
I`m gonna tell it to you anyway
You know, I`ve always liked you, boy
`Cause you were not afraid of me
But things are gonna get mighty rough
Here in Gomorrah-By-The-Sea”
He said, “It`s just like home
It`s so damned hot, I can`t stand it
My fine seersucker suit is all soakin` wet”
And the hills are burning
The wind is raging
And the clock strikes midnight
In the Garden of Allah
“Nice car.........
I love those Bavarians.....so meticulous
Y`know, I remember a time when things were a lot more fun around here
When good was good and evil was evil
Before things got so.......fuzzy
Yeah, I was once a golden boy like you
And I was summoned to the halls of power in the heavenly court
And I dined with the deities who looked upon me with favor
For my talents; my creativity
We sat beneath the palms in the warm afternoon
And drank the wine with Fitzgerald and Huxley
They pawned a biting phrase
From tongues hot with blood
And drained their pens of bitter ink
Vainly reaching for the bottle full of empty Edens
Branded specially for the ones
Who had come with great expectations
To the perfumed halls of Allah
For their time in the sun
We were stokin` the fires
And oilin` up the machinery
Until the gods found out we had ideas of our own”
And the war was coming
The earth was shaking
And there was no more room
In the Garden of Allah
“Today I made and appearance downtown
I am an expert witness, because I say I am
And I said, `Gentleman....and I use that word loosely...I will testify for you
I`m a gun for hire, I`m a saint, I`m a liar
Because there are no facts, there is no truth, just data to be manipulated
I can get you any result you like....what`s it worth to ya?
Because there is no wrong, there is no right
And I sleep very well at night
No shame, no solution
No remorse, no retribution
Just people selling t-shirts
just opportunity to participate in this pathetic little circus
And winning, winning, winning` “
It was a pretty big year for predators
The marketplace was on a roll
And the land of opportunity
Spawned a whole new breed of men without souls
This year, notoriety got all confused with fame
And the devil is downhearted
Because there`s nothing left for him to claim
He said, “It`s just like home
It`s so low-down, I can`t stand it
I guess my work around here has all been done
And the fruit is rotten
The serpent`s eyes shine
As he wraps around the vine
In the Garden of Allah
in the Garden of Allah
in the Garden of Allah
I always thought it was about that old episode of "The Outer Limits," "The Guests." They also could have left at any time but chose not to (plus there was a Beast upstairs!)
Of course that "former Illuminist" whose name I forget and who claimed that the master of every recording was prayed over in a Satanic temple to fill it with demons claimed it was about something called "the night winds." I have no idea what that is.
