So I'm a young teenage boy traveling around the Midwest with my father. He works and I mostly go to baseball games.
One night we were in Milwaukee. I took the "Stadium Bus" from our downtown hotel out to the old County Stadium. Lew Burdette was pitching for the Braves. As the game progressed it became obvious that he was working on a no-hitter. The tension was unbelievable. There was still no score going into the eighth inning where Burdette doubled and scored the only run. Still three more out to go for the no-hitter. Every pitch is cheered. And he did it. He faced only 27 batters, but missed a perfect game because he hit one batter who was doubled off on the next play.
I saw more than my share of baseball games as a kid. This was the most memorable.
After the game I got onto the "Stadium Bus" to go back to the hotel. Sitting behind me was a slightly older teenage couple. The girl said to the boy, "Gee, what a boring game. They only scored one run."
I nearly turned around and slugged her.
