Eli also claimed to never have taken a drink in his life. He had John Huston coach him on how to play a drunk in the Misfits. Stayed married to one woman his whole life.

A wonderful man, and a fantastic actor to play men the very opposite of his personal character.

Stayed married to one woman his whole life.

66 years of a strong marriage, until his death at 98

Never knew Wallach was a veteran. If you go to the Philadelphia Independence National Park center and Liberty Bell exhibit, there are three well-done films that take you back to the history of 1776 and the forming of our country.

In one of those films Wallach plays Benjamin Franklin. And it's a memorable performance.

And I'll never forget the Franklin quote that Wallach delivered after the Constitution was signed:

"You've got a country.... if you can keep it."

And that refers to the words James Madison relayed:

In these sentiments, Sir, I agree to this Constitution, with all its faults, — if they are such; because I think a general Government necessary for us, and there is no form of government but what may be a blessing to the people, if well administered; and I believe, farther, that this is likely to be well administered for a course of years, and can only end in despotism, as other forms have done before it, when the people shall become so corrupted as to need despotic government, being incapable of any other.

Speech to the Constitutional Convention (September 17, 1787); reported in James Madison, Journal of the Federal Convention, ed. E. H. Scott (1893), p. 742.
