Former first lady Michelle Obama told first-generation college freshmen to surround themselves with a community to help them survive college.
Mrs. Obama was the first in her family to attend college. She said: "Finding a cohort for yourself and starting to build your community is going to be important. College wasn't meant to do alone."
She spoke at the fifth annual Beating the Odds summit. Reach Higher, an education initiative launched by Mrs. Obama during her husband's presidency, partnered with Twitter and Handshake, a college-to-career network, for the daylong workshop. It included a celebrity panel with La La Anthony from the Starz show "Power" and Daveed Diggs from the blockbuster musical "Hamilton."
Mrs. Obama, 54, who attended Princeton University, remembered how odd she felt her first time on the campus. "It was like a whole new language," she said. "I had never sat in a lecture, I didn't know what a syllabus was."

That's only scratching the surface of what she didn't know, including basic grammar.
This 'Princeton' must be easy to get into. Sounds like they'll accept anyone.
And, "College Wasn't Meant to Do Alone"...Really? That string of words is a joke on her part, right?
Yes. Yes it is.
More “it takes a village idiot” crap.
Snowflake city.
They all should be required to do BCT before going to college.

I completed four college degrees alone.
“This ‘Princeton’ must be easy to get into. Sounds like they’ll accept anyone.”
I’ve had Ivy League (Harvard, Brown etc.) grads who applied for positions in our company. The HR lady was mad that these so-called eggheads’ could NOT even make the distinction between the words “lose” and “loose” in a sentence..
(just like some Freepers I know of who are around the 50 year age mark and still couldn’t)

And the mainstream media makes fun of Melania Trump for her English syntax. Melania is multi-lingual and highly intelligent. Michelle is an affirmative action Ebonics specialist.
So they should get “help from their friends” and cheat?
I flunked out by myself.
BS degree.
Damned snowflakes. I entered Berkeley at 16. There were no free rides, no gentleman’s C. I had one course where the German’s accent was so thick I had to sit in the front row and transcribe, and then later I’d try to decipher the notes taken. I later had an apartment adjacent to the leader of the Young Communists on campus and had the FBI on my ass for years. Yeah, life’s tough.
You are correct in that Moochelle is preaching a leftist ideology. Yet making a network of friends and faculty for support is crucial not only for your college career but also for your adult working career. I was a loner at college and found some adult career pathways closed as I was not well connected.
She was treated so very brutally at Princeton. I tremble every time I step into that town.
Hey mooch where is the old man??? Valjar speaking again for ya?
In all fairness, she’s just being consistent.
Zero did campaign on ‘yes we can make others pay for stuff.’
I mean really! What is difficult about the experience for anyone who went to even a second rate High School?
They are just helping create more adults that are children mentally.. Just like them.
I was also the first in my family, with the exception of one aunt to earn a bachelors degree.
When I left for college, I loaded a bunch of stuff in my car and left the house. Alone. That’s the way it works.
One of my sons recently earned his bachelors. When he started, he also left the house with a carload of stuff, alone.
It ain’t that hard Shelly
She is simply blowing truisms out her widest part. A truism, of course, is something that goes without saying, but you say it anyway (e.g., “It is what it is”).
First thing I did when I hit college was to become a part of a dorm wing. We had mix/mingle events and meetings. And right away we hit it off with certain people we’d be living with. Some would be upperclassmen who knew the ropes and pitfalls, the blessings and curses.
Who doesn’t know this already?
Actually, the only true loner I’ve ever heard of who went through college utterly incognito was brocko. Nobody ever saw him at Columbia. Inquiring minds want to know.
