Mike Trout

Posted on 06/19/2018 10:42:48 PM PDT by NKP_Vet

On 9 Jun Mike Trout went 0-5 against Minnesota and was batting .299. Eight days and eight games later he’s batting .335. This is unbelievable. If he keeps this hitting up we might see the first .400 hitter since Ted Williams hit .406 in 1941.

Trout may be the best player in the Bigs but please. Eleven days does not a season make. You could take 11 days out of multiple careers and extrapolate it to hitting .400 or better.

When Ted Williams hit .406, he had just 27 SO in 606 PA.

Excerpt from an article about Ted Williams...

Virgil Trucks tells a perhaps apocryphal tale about a game between Detroit and the Red Sox in Boston: “Joe Ginsberg was catching and Williams came up and walked on four straight pitches, and Joe’s questioning the umpire about it. On the last one, he said, ‘Bill’—Bill Summers was the umpire. He said, ‘Bill, don’t you think that ball was a strike?’ And Bill said to Joe, ‘Mr. Ginsberg, Mr. Williams will let you know when it is a strike.’”

The Bleacher Report started a discussion of WAR:

Getting to 14.4 WAR would bring the 26-year-old’s career total to a whopping 68.6 WAR. That would elevate him over Mickey Mantle (61.4 WAR) and Ty Cobb (63.4 WAR) for the most ever through a player's age-26 season.

Trout is also accumulating WAR at darn near the same rate as the granddaddy of all WAR producers, Babe Ruth. The Bambino averaged 10.5 WAR per 162 games. Trout is at 9.8.

For anyone in the current era of baseball even come close to a 10 WAR is insane. To be on a long term streak that puts Trout into the Ruthian area is just amazing.

Heard the exact same story about Rogers Hornsby when he was hitting .420 in the ‘20s.

Brett, Gwynn, and Ichiro were the last guys who had a shot.

Rod Carew had a .388 season in 1977 where he flirted with the .400 mark a lot of the season. If eight of his ABs would have resulted in a hit rather than being ruled an error, or having the fielder make a great play, or would have been called safe on a bang-bang play at first, he would have hit .401.

Mike Trout will not hit .400 but he is probably the best combination of skill and athleticism since Mantle. Like Mantle, Trout has charisma. I'm obviously biased but if the Mick would have taken care of himself and had access to today's medical technology, he would probably hold just about every power hitting record there is.

Yes. It's hard to compare past greats with today. Today is a different game. Size of players today. More international talent. Cutting edge tech. Smaller fields. Pitching alone is different. In Mantles time, they usually didn't face many different pitchers in the same game! So many guys would just pitch on thru, +150 pitch counts were the norm.

Think Mike Trout can still hit .400 this year?

He’s currently at .306, which is exactly his career average.

He’s basically done nothing since I made the posting, so the answer is no. The MVP of the American League so far is Martinez of the Red Sox. He’s the most consistent player in the league......so far.
