Pop-up ads make using the internet almost futile. I use one that is trumpeted the 'best' It is a total failure.
Suggestions, please, for one that works.
And for that very reason is why I for one rarely go there anymore except on my Android occasionally. FauxNrews has succeeded in making their web site a real nuisance and pain in the arse to visit with their obnoxious pop up ads.
Bingo.
I also recommend that NoScript be installed in addition to uBlock Origin; but this is for power users only. Usually it only breaks sites that are poorly implemented; and then it needs to be fine tuned with judicious whitelisting. Unfortunately, many sites are poorly implemented and thus are affected.
Get the “Brave” browser, created by the guy who founded Firefox. Ad blocking is built-in.
Newspapers thrived on “static” advertising for hundreds of years, and there’s no reason, to my mind, why advertising on web pages can’t be the same. Nobody wants to visit a page with active content screaming at you from every direction while you’re trying to focus on the content you actually want to see. I can see where attention-getting devices might be very tempting to advertisers, but in the long run they’re going to be counterproductive, as people either use ad-blockers, refrain from visiting obnoxious sites, or simply refuse to pay attention to advertising altogether.
I’ve been in computers for around 40 years. This is my personal advice. First; Never use anything Google. May as well invite strangers to your house to go through your private paperwork. I’ve looked at some of their coding and it’s not nice. Second; use Adblock plus AND Ublock Origin both. They work well in tandem. Third; Use NoScript to block most Java. And finally; Use a Firefox based browser if you can with Startpage as your main page for searches. I prefer TOR. Yes, it’s a bit slower, and yes, the FBI will notice you’re using a more secure browser. Who cares?
That’s all fine for me. I like to be as secure as possible. You’ll need to decide how much security vs. usability you want since every layer of protection makes for less sites you can visit. Especially with NoScript which comes bundled with TOR. You also should be aware that all browsers these days take care of true PopUp ads. If you actually have new windows opening up over the one you’re currently viewing, then you likely have a malware issue. But if you have just lots of ads on each page or ones that slide up or down from the margins, then the extensions I mentioned should take care of that.
Other than that I recommend you turn off cookies and enable private browser mode in whichever browser you choose. That’s my two cents and likely worth less than that. Good luck.
I use uBlock Origin & have very few problems. Sites will pick up you are using an adblocker & ask if you will ‘whitelist’ their sites, but I never do. So far, I’ve not been totally blocked from using a site. Having used Adblocker Plus in the past, I like uBlock better - personal preference.
I use AdGuard: https://adguard.com/en/welcome.html
Yep.
For u-toob I use an older version of Pale-Moon where the add-on app VideoDownloader still works. I download those videos and watch them from my local hard drive. I never see the ads.
I love Ghostary. Have used all the others this is the best and you train it.
I just added it.
Will let you know how it and I get along with my Chrome Book.
Right, the ad blockers are just as annoying as the ads.
No blockers for me. I just leave sites that overdo the ads.
It works with Win10 according to the site. It leaves almost all spots reserved for ads blank. All ads are redirected to 127.0.0.0
“then refusing to let you see their content unless you un-block. I refuse and skip those sites.”
Me too. It’s our one weapon to fight back. I didn’t mind an occasional ad, but good god, videos and audio starting up on its own, full page pop ups, pop ups you can’t find a kill button for, and 5-10 ads popping up all around.
Screw that.
“By the time you get done whitelisting all the sites that demand you turn off Ad Block Plus”
Avoid whitelisting. It bothered me once or twice at first, when I really wanted to see a story. But then, I noticed I was just fine without that ad.
I'll second that! I use Google Chrome with the Ad Blocker Plus plug-in, works great.
Hope you like it.
It seems to run much faster for me (running on a Macbook) than the other programs. After trying it out, I got rid of the others.
I use opera as a browser and their pop up blocker Adblock Plus. Works well. I’ve posted articles from some sites and some folks here complained about pop ups you can’t get around but I had absolutely none.
BIG DITTO'S :-)
Refresh your browser first, and use Ad Block Plus.
