A white man confronted a black female swimmer at a ritzy California hotels pool on Monday, questioning whether she bathed before taking a dip, according to video of the incident.
The man insisted he was perfectly within his rights to ask such an intrusive question at the Westin Hotel in Pasadena, footage posted Wednesday by the woman, Texas resident Carle Wheeler, showed.

No, not in the a general context, but I have and will direct persons exiting the public pool locker room who obviously have not followed the rules of showering off before entering the natatorium. The health and welfare of my grandkids, wife and myself trump some disrespectful person, 12 or 40 year old’s “liberty”. We live in society- and it is up to us to enforce societal norms.
Now, do I sit at the men’s locker exit and check for compliance? No, but once someone makes a correction, the life guards usually start looking out too. This is at a military installation pool. Civvy standards may be so low, I don’t know.
What about you? You could care less I suppose? That’s chlorines job huh?
The YMCA Long ago posted a sign requiring a shower before entering the pool. It may have been a generational thing as well. Not just the Y.Many Public Pools had signs requiring showers before entry and the life guards enforced the rule.
Exactly. Folks should think it through. If people who appear to be grungy use the pool, they aren't likely to be hygienic when they're in the pool. A shower wouldn't change that. The question NEVER should've been directed to someone using the pool. The issue is with whomever is supervising the pool.
I don't trust at all anymore that public pools, even on cruise ships and mid-range hotels, are clean. For that reason, when I swim, it's when the pool first opens in the AM.
I don’t play pool police, no.
Did the water brown up around her bottom?
So what makes you not look the other way? Rhetorically, I don’t expect an answer.
I just don’t police other people. I’m usually reading a book.
You would think the guy said he went into a Wal-Mart,saw a bunch of black people and said, smells like a bunch of Obama voters in here
I do. And I will comment on ‘emotional support animals’ too. Especially where food is served, prepared, or sold.
I don’t have to put up with other peoples crap.
Probably had more to do with them being children than it did with them being black.
I’m also guessing the answer was no, they hadn’t.
Agreed, I don’t attribute every jackass interaction between people of different races as instigations of racism.. Jackasses are jackasses to everyone...
Everyone has run into that rule nazi or what not in a public or semi public place, that think they are the gate keeper to civilization...
Guy could be a racist, but not going to assume instantly that his motivations were race based.
> the life guards enforced the rule <
And that is a key point. A private citizen trying to enforce a rule might have the best of intentions. But he’s just asking for trouble.
The BS part is that this is a story at all, a national one at that. Who effing cares? Kick him out of the hotel for being rude then.
There is a possibility that he asks that of all kids.
I remember the first I used a public bath in Korea.
I was with two Korean friend - ROK soldiers I knew. After we undressed in the locker room and got our towels, we headed to where the main steaming bath-pool was. There was already several men in the large pool-bath. I proceeded to set my towell at the edge of the bath and step into it. Men in the bath started shouting and my friends grabbed my arms and pulled me back. You must first go to the shower room and wash off. Wow. I did not know the ettiguete. I might have really been in trouble, maybe even ejected from the place, if I had not been with my two Korean friends.
White man at a Los Angeles hotel?
In LA the smart bet is that this wasn’t an American “white man”.
If it is not your own private pool in your own back yard... a sweaty, young girl should be the least of your concerns.
So words exchanged between two private citizens in a spat is somehow “news”?
Oh yeah, when the “victim” is black.
GET IT TO THE GUARDIAN AND ASIAN PAPERS
OH THE HORROR
