Einstein's travel diaries reveal 'shocking' xenophobia

The publication of Albert Einstein’s private diaries detailing his tour of Asia in the 1920s reveals the theoretical physicist and humanitarian icon’s racist attitudes to the people he met on his travels, particularly the Chinese. Written between October 1922 and March 1923, the diaries see the scientist musing on his travels, science, philosophy and art. In China, the man who famously once described racism as “a disease of white people” describes the “industrious, filthy, obtuse people” he observes. He notes how the “Chinese don’t sit on benches while eating but squat like Europeans do when they relieve themselves out in the leafy woods. All this occurs quietly and demurely. Even the children are spiritless and look obtuse.” After earlier writing of the “abundance of offspring” and the “fecundity” of the Chinese, he goes on to say: “It would be a pity if these Chinese supplant all other races. For the likes of us the mere thought is unspeakably dreary.” Ze’ev Rosenkranz, senior editor and assistant director of the Einstein Papers Project at the California Institute of Technology, said: “I think a lot of comments strike us as pretty unpleasant – what he says about the Chinese in particular. “They’re kind of in contrast to the public image of the great humanitarian icon. I think it’s quite a shock to read those and contrast them with his more public statements. They’re more off guard, he didn’t intend them for publication.”

In the spirit of today's "Woke" SJW's judgmentalism and view of historical figures by today's standard's, we must tear down, remove all mention of Einsteim in the public sphere. He is, after all the father of the Atomic bomb.

Well, there goes studying the Theory of Relativity.

It is not shocking at all that a 1920’s European would say some negative things about the Chinese in private letters.

They’ll probably say he’s anti-Semite.

However, that’s it. Everyone STOP obeying E = mc2.

Anyone who continues to adhere to said principle will be deemed a xenophobe.

I watched the video and these were rather tame, not offensive and in the context of the time, nearly a hundred years ago, not surprising. SJW drama queens are just looking for the next person, even dead, to trash.

"...Albert Einstein..."

Social Justice Warriors will simply indicate that Albert Einstein is a “dumb” person.

Well that tears it - I’m never voting for him or watching any of his movies ever again!

The Nazis called Einstein’s work “Jewish science”, and banned the study of it. Today’s Nazis (the radical left) will probably ban Einstein’s work as well. Perhaps they’ll call it “white science”.

Replace “dreary people” with culture where “nail that sticks out is hammered down” and it might be more acceptable.

Sure, I keep telling people Einstein wasn't a cute cartoon or a cuddly teddy bear.

Einstein could be a jerk. That didn't mean he was the worst person in the world, but he wasn't your buddy either.

Just because he could understand relativity that didn't mean that he'd want to listen to your problems or mine.

An objective person might want to given consideration to Einstein's thoughts. He isn't the first genius to draw these conclusions. Einstein's great intellect is beyond my league; In most things Einsteinian, I defer to him.

Not really.

Mass energy equivalence is something that can be roughly explained to very young children, and the Special Theory of Relativity can be quantitatively conveyed to any relatively bright person who understands right triangle geometry.

The theoretical knowledge of E=mc2 gets you no closer to a working atomic bomb than you were before you knew about binding energy; building an atomic bomb involves enormous challenges in metallurgy, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science, and applied physics about which Einstein knew nothing.

Historically, the title is usually given to Robert Oppenheimer, and "Father of the Hydrogen Bomb" to Edward Teller. The former is probably also undeserved, and really belongs to the great Enrico Fermi. The latter title absolutely was warranted, but should be shared with Stanislaw Ulam.

The Theory of Relativity was all relative anyhow depending how you feel that day.

More shocking to conservatives should be Einstein's absolutely loony politics. He was convinced Stalin was a great guy, and even after the Khrushchev Report detailed his many horrific crimes—courtesy of the Soviet leadership itself no less—Einstein still would not denounce him.

Einstein a humanitarian?

He keeps using that word. I do not think it means what he thinks it means.
