A British woman plunged to her death, along with her partner, while taking a selfie on a picturesque wall in Portugal, according to local authorities.
Perth man Michael Kearns, 33, Louise Benson, 37, his British partner, fell 30 metres off a beach wall and were found by shocked locals early on Tuesday morning.
Rui Pereira da Terra, the captain of the maritime authority in Cascais, said the two victims appeared to have lost their balance while taking a photograph overlooking Fishermens Beach.
Everything seems to indicate that the fall happened when they were probably trying to take a selfie, he said.
"As we found a mobile phone on the wall, our theory is that they were taking a selfie, but they dropped the phone and leaned to grab it and fell," Mr Pereira da Terra told the Portuguese Lusa news agency.
Locals have said the wall is dangerous, and have asked for something to be done about it.

You cold hearted dark humored bastard! We could be friends!
Cleansing the gene pool...one millennial at a time.
oh my God, are these real selfie death photos? How sad for their families.
Death by vanity
I don’t know that these photos resulted in death, I was just responding to the article posted with examples of the nonsense people are committing out of vanity for a selfie. There are many more online. I did hear about the one who got gored by a bison taking a selfie in Yellowstone recently, and stuff like this is happening all the time. Youngsters have always felt invincible at a certain age range, but todays youth are looking for internet fame and willing to go full retard to get it.
Are we sure it wasn’t suicide?
This sort of thing seems to be common now. Perhaps cell phones and selfie sticks should be outlawed or registered and then confiscated.
I thought maybe they were in business together.
That top picture is a nope, nope, nope for me. My palms are sweating just looking at it.
Are the Brits so godless that they’ve removed the words husband and wife?
lol
People quoted in the article calling for a safety net along the wall. News flash morons: Cliffs are inherently dangerous. Be careful when you’re close to the edge.
Oh snap, Darwin was onto something, yo!
Lulz!
Obviously we need to regulate selfies!
No one has ever claimed taking s selfie as a human right. So we can ban selfies. We can start with stiff penalties for the manufacturer of any mobile phine capable of taking a selfie.
Whats that you say? You want to know how they can do that?
That is not our problem. Are you part of the solution or part of the problem?
When I was at the Grand Canyon, there was a guy there leaning forward so he could look like he was flying for his selfie. All I could think of was what would happen if a gust of wind came up.
Since there are few clearer symptoms of today’s epidemic of narcissism and self-absorption than compulsive selfie-taking, somehow I don’t feel like mourning this particular loss.
Ban Assault Phones NOW.
People who can climb like that can probably take selfies there at no additional danger.
But did they get the shot?

Better, is this a way to circumvent the suicide clause in insurance policies?

Paraphrasing Dean Werner, “Stupidity (and probably trespassing) for the sake of vanity is no way to go through life, son”
