Rats prefer the neighborhoods of Harlem, the Upper West Side, and Bedford-Stuyvesant — and they really like to party in the summer, a new study shows.

Citywide, the rat population grew about 10 percent from 2016 to 2017 based on complaints filed to 311, the RentHop study released on Tuesday shows.

This can be endlessly entertaining.

Came to Brooklyn from San Francisco for a week, great time, son was 8 daughter 6 wife there, all of us laughing watching the rats box each other while we were waiting for the subway.

Yea, I did it on a dairy/ pig farm, there is a lot of them, a lot more than you would think, kind of like zombies. I would use a high end nv mono through the scope and it worked ok, but lighting them up with a red light mounted to the top of the scope made for a more wieldy setup.

That is where these guys made their money, dairy farms and pig farms. Zombies is a good analogy and there were hundreds if not thousands of those little rodents. Amazed me how many there were. They may have used a red light I don’t recall but they had their systems down.

Yes, it's really true that the best things in life are free. Considering the constant breakdowns and delays on the subways and buses create very long waiting periods, I find watching the resident rodents on the tracks affords entertainment while waiting for the subway which never comes. How sick is THAT---that you depend on street rats to keep you entertained?

It's also a sport in Great Britain. They call it "ratting". I imagine it's cheaper than riding a horse and chasing a fox. It looks like fun to me, ratting that is.

Air Rifle Ratting

In 1977, the Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) had their national convention at the Statler Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan. A member of the YAF delegation who went to the hotel to negotiate arrangements and prices for the event told me that as they were negotiating, a rat ran across the floor. One of the YAF reps then remarked, "oh, I see you allow pets." The hotel management immediately became very reasonable and accommodating.

The hotel has since gone through a couple three name changes and probably some remodeling, but its phone number--212-736-5000--always remains the same and probably always will, for some strange reason.

It is, I wouldn’t want to tell you what my air rifles cost, much more than most of mmy powder burners, but, it’s really really fun.

Watched a little of the vid, he’s using inexpensive nv camera setup, that would probably be a good alternative to expensive nv/lamping. Have to get use to that setup though, he’s not looking through the scope, the camera is, and he is actually using the monitor mounted on top of the scope to aim.

It’s probably cheaper than those hi dolla nags they ride around on in the English countryside.

A lot less expensive, but still, most people can’t reconcile what a PCP air rifle costs, especially compared to their rim/ center fire brethren.

Not all rats are leeches, some actually have jobs..

Sadly most of them have jobs in the food service industry..

My boy wanted a Gamo air rifle that cost around 200. I told him he could buy a .22 for that much but he wanted it. He sold it about 4 years later for about 80. It was nice and accurate but being a crack barrel it was not exactly a quick shooter and with the titanium pellets it was about as loud as a 22. I looked up Gamo and they even sell some expensive air rifle.

Truth be told, the rats are probably the least offensive things living there.

The head Rat runs the state so, of course, the Rat activity in NY is bad and getting worse.
