NL exec rips Bryce Harper: 'He's a losing player'

Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper won’t be a free-agent until October, but the anonymous backlash has already begun. One National League executive didn’t hold back, calling Harper a “losing player,” according to Robert Murray of FRS.

What happened?

A “top National League executive” sent Murray three texts with some harsh thoughts on Harper.

Text one: “He’s simply overrated. The good ain’t worth the bad. He’s a losing player. Cares about himself more than the team. If I was in charge and had money, my team would not pursue him. We would use that money to sign 2-3 winning players.”

Text two: “He’s a losing player. I would not sign him. I would use that money to sign 2-3 winning players.”

Text three: “If he gets more than 10-years, $300 million, I’d be surprised. I would not give him 10 years period and certainly not at that AAV. He’s just not worth it. He’s a selfish, losing player.”

The texts hit on some key points. Harper is overrated, not worth the money and is not a winning player, according to the exec.

My BIL and myself watched Sunday's Giants - Nationals game and saw something that validates this exec's opinion.

Harper hit a slow roller just to the right of the pitchers mound (almost a bunt) and started a leisurely stroll toward first after getting out of the box very slowly.

If he had hustled he would have beat the throw easy. And he was the last out of the inning.

So naturally John Daniels will try to get him for the Rangers.

Tons of talent but fragile. When he does play hard, he invariably gets injured.

“So naturally John Daniels will try to get him for the Rangers.”

Better hope not.

His INITIAL asking price will be $400 million over 10 years.

With his “me me me” attitude he is not worth $50 million over 5 years. His manager doesn’t like him. His team mates don’t like him.

Hell, his own mother doesn’t like him.

He is poison in the clubhouse.

Which is precisely why Daniels will do it.

Bastard just got an extension, I’m done with the Rangers.

Poison?

Also, his dog bit him.
Hope the dog is okay.

The Yankees might take him. Steinbrenner would have signed him a long time ago. Either Yankees, Rangers, Braves or Nationals may sign him. He may be another A-Rod, with a bloated contract.

Nats are stacked in the outfield—Eaton, Taylor, this kid Soto who is tearing it up, Matt Adams in left when not playing 1st, Difo played a few in left, Andrew Stevenson, one of the best prospects in MLB in Victor Robles. Harper having OK-mediocre year so far, Nationals hopefully won’t take the Boras bait.

Harper could learn something from Ovechkin.

Yep, back in the day a player like that would get his ass kicked by his teammates.

A-Rod never lacked hustle, nor the desire for his team to win.

Harper lacks both.

True. Harper just wants more TV attention and more All Star appearances.

"Tons of talent but fragile." True. Good point. As on MLB writer said, "Everyone love to cheer Mike Trout and everyone loves to boo Bryce Harper." Harper is an innocent pawn in the MLB public relations campaign and I don't blame him for acting like a punk. MLB marketing should leave him alone and focus on Christian winners like Trout.

I’ve seen the enormous amounts of attention Harper has gotten over the last few years - won’t call it hype, because Harper really is very good. But Mike Trout is easily the better player - he doesn’t get the same kind of press because he’s on the West Coast and many of his games are played too late for East Coast audiences to watch, but Trout is everything that Harper wishes he was.

It's an insult to Trout to even consider the comparison. IIRC, only Babe Ruth has recorded a WAR over 13 ... until Trout this year.

Again, someone can look it up if they choose, but Ruth had a WAR over 13 for four seasons. If Trout finishes above 13 this year, it seems a cinch to carry over the trend for at least 3 more seasons.

Consider that he will mostly likely win another MVP, so that will be 3 MVPs in 5 years, with the other two as runner up. IOW, the only fair comparison to Trout is Ruth.
