What is fascinating is that a brutal and bloody civil war is about two years away and not a clue about it in the most popular media of the time...

In a few days Abraham Lincoln will deliver a speech that should bring that grim possibility into sharper focus. It remains to be seen whether the national media will notice, seeing that Lincoln is just a country lawyer waging an underdog campaign for a U.S. Senate seat from the frontier state of Illinois.

Few realized at the time how consequential the 1858 Lincoln challenge to Senator Douglas would be. Douglas made a fateful error in agreeing to public debates with Lincoln.

We are, the issue being much less clear than the tangible slavery of blacks in the South and the threat of its expansion. Today's issue and "culture war" is for the very soul of America, is couched in ideology, and revolves around an enemy few seem to recognize that has succeeded over the last 100+ years to almost completely eviscerate the Constitution: the $4 trillion mostly unconstitutional federal government.

From an FR post the other day, that reads almost eerily a bit like some of what Lincoln was saying here...

[W]e are in a culture war for the soul of America. The center of this war is battle for our Free Constitutional Republic. The Left discovered many decades ago they couldn’t turn us into a socialist state immediately, so they incorporated “creeping socialism” AKA creeping tyranny.

If Patriots decide that we ARE going to restore our Free Constitutional Republic, it won’t happen in a day but if we are at least as determined about freedom as the Left is about tyranny, we’ll win.

The Left is focused on exactly what it wants - Global Totalitarian Government - and will stop at nothing to get it. The problem is much of the Right has no clue what it wants and if you don’t have a clear goal, you’ll NEVER get there. Our goal SHOULD be nothing less than restoration of our Free Constitutional Republic.

The Left is willing to fight and even die for tyranny. Are we willing to fight and die for freedom? Those who are not are already POW’s or MIA’s in this war.

What does it take to win? A lot, just like it took a lot for the Left to have advanced this far in turning our country into a socialist state. We can win but before going into how you can win, you’ve got to decide that you are determined that NOTHING will take away your God-given freedoms and country.

As the Leftist tyranny has advanced, so the Right restoring freedom will come once it has the will to do it. Once you have the WILL, the HOW will come. We did it 200+ years ago against tyranny and we can and MUST do it again.

I'll just add this as a comment about the nature of this conflict we are in:

Generally, the Left is of the flesh (and Satan) and the Right is of the spirit (and God).

"But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now."Galatians 4:29.

The Right generally likes its life and wants to be at peace while the Left is miserable and wants to make everyone else miserable. Whether Islam vs. Israel, or the American Left vs. the American Right, or tyranny vs. freedom, it is always the Left that is constantly attacking the Right. And although it is not generally its nature, the Right MUST stand up, fight, and defeat these miserable Leftists.
