Washington (AFP) - Media watchdog groups expressed alarm Friday over the seizing of a journalist's records as part of a probe into intelligence leaks resulting in the indictment of a congressional staffer.
The Justice Department late Thursday announced the indictment of James Wolfe, 58, on three counts of making false statements about his contacts with three reporters.
As part of the probe, the Justice Department seized years of records related to two email accounts and a phone number belonging to New York Times reporter Ali Watkins, the newspaper reported.
The seizing of records raises constitutional concerns about press freedom, activists said. At the same time, the admission of a personal relationship between the reporter and the source raised questions about journalistic ethics.
The Freedom Forum Institute, a media rights organization, said the case is the first in the Trump administration in which a reporter's records have been seized.

This is the first known instance of the Trump administration secretly collecting the communications of journalists, a continuation of “the aggressive tactics employed under President Barack Obama,” the Times notes.
Mueller seized lawyer’s records; DOJ seizes reporter’s records. What’s the difference? Both wrong or both right, can’t have it any other way.

It is legitimate if they have reason to suspect (sounds like it from the indictment) that she may have classified documents in her possession. Freedom of the press does NOT include espionage and it is illegal for ANY person to possess classified intelligence documents.
With that said, the selective outrage of the media is the norm with this President so unlike the last administration expect this to be covered ad nauseam.
A reporter doing a story on heroin is not allowed to possess a kilogram of heroin any more than a reporter doing a story on child pornography is allowed to possess that. A classified document is just as illegal as those items and it falls outside the “freedom of the press.”

Exactly. Yes, it’s not a good thing when government is raiding journalists, or harassing guys like Assange. Going after mere publishers is police state crap and there are a million other ways they can isolate leakers of classified information.
But none of these civil libertarians gave a tinker’s damn about Sharyl Attkisson. None...
Also, in this day and age, most classifying is done to conceal governmental wrongdoing and embarrassing activities from us. Not legitimate secrets. They aren’t hiding the location of SSBNs, they are hiding office affairs, the shocking money spent on a table, intelligence plots against some candidates for election, running guns to cartels, etc.
