In the "What Did He Expect?" category, a deputy sheriff who defeated his boss for election was fired one minute after the polls closed. That means Sheriff-elect Mark Maggs of Bon Homme County, South Dakota, is out of a job until he takes office in January, when incumbent Lenny Gramkow's term expires, the Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan reports.
Maggs was Gramkow's only challenger in the Republican primary on Tuesday (June 5). With no other candidates seeking the job, the GOP winner would become the sheriff for a four-year term. Maggs defeated Gramkow by a margin of almost 3 to 1.

Pretty much standard practice actually. In our little town Police Dept., one of the road policemen ran against the Chief, and when he lost the Chief demoted him from road cop to dispatch. Was actually the best thing that happened to him as he quit and then secured a better job earning more money.
I don't know how things work in South Dakota.
Well, the incoming sheriff should have plenty of time to prepare hes now out of work for the next seven months.
Sheriff’s have a lot of power and it’s only checked by voters.
Collecting unemployment and being paid out for his leave. But it is a break in service.
The adjoining county should hire him for seven months. Stick it to the incumbent Sheriff and make sure he gets sent to all cross-jurisdictional events.
From the sound of things, everyone on the department probably voted for the deputy in this case.
That would be funny.
When the new sheriff takes over, he won’t have to hire the old one. If you can’t get along, get along.
Hence the expression “there’s a new sheriff in town”.
WORST.....ANDY......GRIFFITH.....SHOW.....EPISODE.....EVER!!!
He needed the new guy out of sight while the shred-a-thon commences!
I hope the current Sheriff doesn’t have any skeletons in his closet cause he just gave the Incoming Sheriff a key to it.
“We need to talk about those firearms and 10 lbs of Meth that came up missing from the evidence locker in 17...”
A Sheriff no one likes fires a young guy who just thrashed him in an Election.
Now he is surrounded by a Department that doesn’t like him and most likely voted for his replacement.
I doubt we have heard the last of this story. Most likely will end with “Former Sheriff Arrested for x,y and Z”
“I know you hired me because I was the best man for the job and I just want to thank you, cousin Andy.” - Barney Fife
