At a Glance:
May 2018 was the hottest in 124 years of May records across the Lower 48.
Eight states broke warmth records and no state was colder than average.
Two states had their wettest Mays.
May 2018 was the hottest of any May in 124 years of recording keeping for the continental United States, eclipsing the extreme heat of that month in the 1930s during the Dust Bowl era.
The average temperature for the Lower 48 states last month was 65.41 degrees Fahrenheit, 5.21 degrees Fahrenheit above the 1901-2000 average, according to the state of the climate report released by NOAA on Wednesday.
That knocked out May 1934 for the warmest May on record. Rounding out the top five warmest Mays are 1936, 2012 and 2000.

Yeah, but in Texas we had one of the coldest Aprils in a while. They will fail to mention that.
I wonder if the purveyors of this information made their customary ‘adjustments’ of the temperature data. High desert of CA sure seemed cooler than normal to me.
Bullshiite
Lower 48? Shouldn’t the weather channel know that Hawaii us the southernmost state
Seattle, where I live, is claiming the warmest May ever.
I don’t believe it.
No question it was warmer and drier than average.
But the warmest ever?
No way.
Not here in New England, either—I don’t buy it for a minute.
They must have changed their measurement process again so they can claim more warming!
We had a few 90 degree days already by end of May. I don’t remember it being this way in my youth. May was generally in the 70’s, June 80’s, July 80-90, and August 85-95. This year with April being so cold and May quite warm it feels like spring was skipped. Although with the dreadful hours I keep I don’t see much of the daytime weather so my impression might be a bit skewed.

Bull dinky. I’m in New Hampshire. It was 62 degrees today and 52 on Tuesday and Monday and I have been wearing a coat to keep warm.
Their data is fine. They started with the conclusion, and created the data to fit that conclusion perfectly.
I learned to do that in high skool physics class.
Well, my neighbor's poison ivy crop is doing just fine, if that's any indication.
Pay no attention to what you actually see and experience; our betters have spoken. It’s the warmest May on record, just not where any of us happen to live. The Weather Channel has said so, and they got that fact from Nobel Prize Winner Al Gore. Who are we to argue?
Usual lack of explaining that Temps have been recorded for longer than that (and it was THAT hot that long ago), and it just indicates normal variations in temperature .
SO 124 years ago it was AS hot THEN ? What was the excuse THEN ? As mass generation of CO2 can’t really be that one’s excuse (making THAT NOT the explanation for this current event either).
“THE DEBATE IS OVER” -Algore : one of the stupidest statements made in the last century ... (Hey Al, scientific debate is NEVER OVER you scientific moron. But then, YOU personally were going to make billions running that carbon credit exchange (speculation middlemen) you helped found, weren’t you ?)
Most of May wasn’t warm in my neighborhood.
All of New England was well below average in May.
Hotter than hell in Louisiana
Maybe the Bureau of Weights and Measures needs to revue the entire process of how all this temperature/weather information is compiled, processed and reported. Bring some technicians from outside of DC to do the work, just to keep it honest...
Certainly not here in Maine.
Your life span is less than 100 years.
Earth has been around for 5,000,000,000 years.
You or me or any of the so called “scientists” have zero data older than 1000 years at the most.
Did you know we get ice age every so many thousand years?
It is then followed by global warming to melt all those ice glaciers. These cycles have repeated again and again, based on actual geological evidence.
Yes, climate has been changing since earth was born. The Sun is mostly responsible because it is million times bigger than earth. And it has cycles of activity.
Worry more about the next ice age, which is sure to come in a few thousand years. Ice age kills far more creatures than global warming.
