Sherell Lewis Jr. was never big into birthdays. His latest came Tuesday, and there were no plans to celebrate beyond a morning visit with family in Leesville, La.
He read birthday cards and carefully tucked them away; his gifts were unopened as he headed out for work.
His mother would see him later that afternoon, 31 years to the day he was born - bleeding onto the scorching asphalt.
Lewis was on foot, helping another driver clear debris from the road, when he was struck by a pickup, police said.
A passerby found his phone and called Lewis' father, relatives would later say.
Lewis' mother rushed frantically to the scene, but authorities kept her away; the last words she could hear her son say lingered after the ambulance roared away without her.
"Momma, momma, momma! I want my momma!" Lewis cried out, his sister told The Washington Post.
He was pronounced dead at Byrd Regional Hospital in Leesville, authorities said.
Soon thereafter, the family learned of a racist Snapchat discussion about Lewis that was circulating online, prompting outrage and calls for justice.
Local police said they were "pretty confident" the chat involved Matthew Martin, the white 18-year-old who, authorities said, killed Lewis with his truck.
In the Snapchat conversation, an image of which was published by ABC affiliate KBLC, a poster using the name Matthew Martin said he had hit "some n--r" on the highway.

I read the newspaper article and as near as I can tell the only people talking about hate crime is the Freeper who started this thread and some of those responding to him. Nothing in the article indicates the authorities are at this point.
Was this a hit and run? The article certainly implies that but never actually says that.
Once he goes to the Louisiana State Prison, he will have plenty of time with his fellow inmates for Racial Sensitivity Training.
The article never mentioned him leaving the scene.
"He is not being held and has not been charged with any crime", Turner said.
See? They cops knew his identity before the controversy erupted. If it were a hit & run incident, they would still be trying to track him down.
The victim probably heard the same word 10 times on his car stereo in the minute before his death. Ridiculous hypocrisy.
It does not appear to be. The article strongly implies so because it is an agitprop piece.
That was my first impression too but the article never actually says it was a hit and run. That's certainly the overall tone but it doesn't actually say it. Do you know if it was a hit and run? If so this comment will hammer him at sentencing for lack of remorse. The comments could also be used to argue it was an intentional act.
Yeah, I don’t know. One can tell from most of what is in the excerpt that it is a “human interest” story mostly.
When it comes to these thngs, I don’t care how many kids the dead guy had, or how his mom grieved, or his last years, or any of that stuff. I care about who’s fault the accident was and the particulars of the event.
Heck, when I used to have television news, when the reporting on a story went from what happened to interviewing people that were there to get their “feelings” about what happened, I would always changed channels.
Concur. It appears from what I read, the man was trying to be helpful when he was hit and killed. Sad!
I agree. It’s really sad to see from some people here.
The article was clearly not an obituary. It was a "typical" MSM emotive/political piece speculating on the criminality of supposed racial statements the driver had made. Its a political article, and FReepers are correctly treating it as such.
I agree with that. Some virtue-signalling going on here. Same with some of the Roseanne threads.
If, indeed, he used racial slurs against the man he killed, it will go from a case of perhaps manslaughter to a highly charged political crime.
If this story is true (most times the truth in these incidents turns out to be WAAAAY different), then hang that peckerwood from the nearest, tallest tree.
I wonder if the MSM had such a sympathetic portrayal of the life of Kate Steinle after the illegal murdered her, as the sympathetic narrative give in this case.
I was all ready to go and excuse him for that murder thing until I found out he used an epithet. Now we gotta flay him.
Bless you for being the only good person left on this forum.
I guess my judgment gets clouded when I see the media pushing every event where an ahole acts like a fool and turns it into to an "all whitey are inherently racist thing". This article does not necessarily do that but you can bet there are activists who will run with it.
He killed the guy. Whether he hated him is irrelevant. Lock him up.
Execute the little bastard and be done with it. He’s of no use to society........or better yet, let them take care of him in Angola.
I’m glad to see some good people on here.
May the Lord bless you!
Yep. It's a pretty foul thread.
