Sherell Lewis Jr. was never big into birthdays. His latest came Tuesday, and there were no plans to celebrate beyond a morning visit with family in Leesville, La.
He read birthday cards and carefully tucked them away; his gifts were unopened as he headed out for work.
His mother would see him later that afternoon, 31 years to the day he was born - bleeding onto the scorching asphalt.
Lewis was on foot, helping another driver clear debris from the road, when he was struck by a pickup, police said.
A passerby found his phone and called Lewis' father, relatives would later say.
Lewis' mother rushed frantically to the scene, but authorities kept her away; the last words she could hear her son say lingered after the ambulance roared away without her.
"Momma, momma, momma! I want my momma!" Lewis cried out, his sister told The Washington Post.
He was pronounced dead at Byrd Regional Hospital in Leesville, authorities said.
Soon thereafter, the family learned of a racist Snapchat discussion about Lewis that was circulating online, prompting outrage and calls for justice.
Local police said they were "pretty confident" the chat involved Matthew Martin, the white 18-year-old who, authorities said, killed Lewis with his truck.
In the Snapchat conversation, an image of which was published by ABC affiliate KBLC, a poster using the name Matthew Martin said he had hit "some n--r" on the highway.

Anyone remember "white girl bleed a lot"?
He killed the guy. Whether he hated him is irrelevant. Lock him up.
Must be a slow fake news day!
Yep. A lot of people really don’t understand the first amendment. Nor do they understand the concept of “I don’t agree with what you are saying but defend your right to say it.”
You condoning his actions?
Though I suspect he was at fault, being someone that has hit a pedestrian myself, and it was completely the pedestrian’s fault, I need more information to form an opinion on whether the driver was at fault.
So - no crime was committed. Just some politically incorrect discussion after the accident, and the snowflakes are screaming for blood.
I think he’s being sarcastic. ;)

Yep.
They found no skid marks.
Exactly. Seems like if you randomly kill people for no particular reason it’s not as serious as killing them out of racial hatred. Never made sense to me. Murder is murder.
Laughing about killing someone is far worse than whether he used a racial slur or not.
I don’t know if there is a crime here or not unless being an insensitive piece of shit is illegal!!!
Unless the kid can be PROVEN to have directed his car to hit him based on his skin color, then no crime committed unless he was wreckless, negligent, or purposeful BEFORE striking the pedestrian.
So this Matthew Martin has established the fact that most criminals don’t value the lives of their victims. To him, he just killed “some n____r.” Fortunately, the law sees this victim as more than that and will punish Martin accordingly. I think its fitting that this statement be allowed into evidence because it shows Martin’s callousness just like statements or actions by other criminals show their callousness.
This breaks my heart. Prayers for his grieving mom.
If the 18 yo who hit the black guy was black and not white trash, calling him a n***** would be considered a term of endearment...

But still certainly needs to be proven that the guy who hit him was the same guy who made the internet posting.
