Sherell Lewis Jr. was never big into birthdays. His latest came Tuesday, and there were no plans to celebrate beyond a morning visit with family in Leesville, La.
He read birthday cards and carefully tucked them away; his gifts were unopened as he headed out for work.
His mother would see him later that afternoon, 31 years to the day he was born - bleeding onto the scorching asphalt.
Lewis was on foot, helping another driver clear debris from the road, when he was struck by a pickup, police said.
A passerby found his phone and called Lewis' father, relatives would later say.
Lewis' mother rushed frantically to the scene, but authorities kept her away; the last words she could hear her son say lingered after the ambulance roared away without her.
"Momma, momma, momma! I want my momma!" Lewis cried out, his sister told The Washington Post.
He was pronounced dead at Byrd Regional Hospital in Leesville, authorities said.
Soon thereafter, the family learned of a racist Snapchat discussion about Lewis that was circulating online, prompting outrage and calls for justice.
Local police said they were "pretty confident" the chat involved Matthew Martin, the white 18-year-old who, authorities said, killed Lewis with his truck.
In the Snapchat conversation, an image of which was published by ABC affiliate KBLC, a poster using the name Matthew Martin said he had hit "some n--r" on the highway.

May the man rest in peace, and I pray he knew Christ.
Nothing more to say, and I am certain I need not read the thread.
I was always taught that debris on a highway was best left to professionals to remove, lest this outcome occur.
RIP.
I have a big problem with them not letting his mother ride with him.
Bingo.
The only thing that matters is the crime; not what the perp was thinking when he committed it.
End Thought Crime Law in the US before it becomes (even more of) a political bludgeon like it is in the UK.
Killing someone isn’t good - but what really hurts is he said something mean about his race!
Its much better if we can kill someone with at least some kindness and respect.
“The only thing that matters is the crime....”
Negligent homicide.
Sentence him to one day in the general population of Angola State Prison.
You are right on and I agree completely.
May he rest in peace through knowing the Lord Jesus Christ.
You get to the heart of the contrary and unnatural hate laws.
There's enough information to know that the driver, believed to be the jerk in question, hit a man and then left the scene of the accident, driving far enough not to be seen but close enough to witness his victim being put in the ambulance. There are several felonies in those actions alone.
If your action instills fear in a group - that is a hate crime (not sure I fully agree). But if you kill a baptist in an auto accident it is different than if you stalked and killed a Baptist and hung him from a tree in front of his church with a note saying “this is what happens to baptists!” So, there is a difference (often misapplied).
You can bet the feds will get involved in this. The white kid will get the book thrown at him.
Some great posts on this thread.
They always mention the races prominently, and use the word “hate” when it’s this way, but never the other way around.
This is not the worst thread I’ve ever seen here - go to the Woman Haters Club here or the Q threads. I think that the nature of “hate crimes” was always going to be a major part of this story.
He killed the guy. Whether he hated him is irrelevant. Lock him up.
Maybe, just maybe the death is an auto accident. His using the n word in describing the victim is not a crime......yet.
Hitting a pedestrian, killing him, and leaving the scene? I can think of half a dozen crimes right there.
Agreed. And then posted that he just hit “some n___r.” This is one case where it is important to know his state of mind. If this was an accident and he panicked and left the scene, but then was remorseful, that would build a case for leniency. But if, after he realized what he did, he put up a vile joke of a post that all he did was kill “some n___r,” that shows lack of remorse and argues against leniency. I normally am against raising this type of talk in a charge as a way to charge someone with a “hate crime” on top of the other crime. But here, while I don’t think it should be the basis for a separate crime, I think his statement is very relevant.
Thanks for adding a bit of sanity and humanity
A couple days ago, there was an article about how many black kids in Detroit couldn’t swim.
I posted on how it’s actually a national tragedy that so many blacks don’t know how to swim and how sad it is when a black kid falls off a dock how he just dies.
Responses to me bordered on sick. Bone density nonsense, how blacks don’t need to learn how to swim and even some idiot who referred to them as negroids.
This isn’t the Free Republic I’ve known and enjoyed since 2001, when I first joined.
I’m almost tempted to use some of those response to write an Opus, but none of these newbies would know what that was.
