Cafeteria Worker Gets No Jail Time for Stealing Nearly $120,000 from Georgia School

A former high school cafeteria manager who pleaded guilty on Friday to stealing nearly $120,000 from a Georgia school over five years will not receive any jail time for her crime.

Authorities initially arrested Watts in January 2014 when a fellow cafeteria worker exposed Watts’ scheme. Authorities estimate Watts raked in $300 a day.

“I saw wrongdoing, so I reported it,” former North Springs High School cafeteria worker Beth Walsh, the employee who exposed the scam, told WSB.

The judge responsible for Watts’ case ordered her to repay the money she stole but did not sentence her to any jail time.

Walsh, who filed a wrongful termination suit against the Fulton County School District, claimed she was fired from her job for exposing the scheme. She later accepted a $50,000 settlement from the school before taking the matter to court.

The Fulton County School District said in a statement that it had instituted tougher record-keeping policies and provided further training to its employees.

Meet Brenda Watts, a former cafeteria manager at North Springs High School in Fulton County.

Beth Walsh, the employee who exposed the scam... Walsh, who filed a wrongful termination suit against the Fulton County School District, claimed she was fired from her job for exposing the scheme. She later accepted a $50,000 settlement from the school before taking the matter to court.

Fired for whistle-blowing while white.

In California, I fired a woman that actually did payroll for me for lying on her time sheet, which is theft. She figured out to change the clock on her personal computer to add in days and hours onto her time clock. She did this when I was out of office. One time I was on vacation and I knew of one entire day she wasn’t there, but claimed she was. Every time she claimed it was some error. Since she was in a union I couldn’t fire her easily. We got a security camera and I was finally able to have evidence the next time she did it.

When I protested her application for unemployment benefits, I told the judge everything, and she said that not lying on her timesheet wasn’t on her job description, so she qualified for benefits.

She would be a perfect Superintendent of their School system. She knows how to loot the system.

The same thing happened in our little town. A woman with Friends of the Library stole almost $300,000. donated to help furnish our new library and she got off with no jail time. Her brother has made some restitution and she is supposed to make monthly payments but that'll never happen. She's in her 60's with no job.

I blame the district attorney for giving her such a sweet deal.

A few years ago, a guy working at our post office also stole money over a long period of time. He served no jail time either. Since that's federal, I would have thought they'd have locked him up.

Try withholding $120,000 in tax payments and see what happens. The government cares a hell of a lot more about taking money in that what happens to it after it gets into the system. Fraud, theft and waste of government money? No big deal. But failure to pay taxes? Death sentence.

Well, armed robbery is kind of a big deal. If someone pulled a gun on me to steal anything, even just a pair of shoes, I’d hope they spent time in a cell.
