Cafeteria Worker Gets No Jail Time for Stealing Nearly $120,000 from Georgia School

A former high school cafeteria manager who pleaded guilty on Friday to stealing nearly $120,000 from a Georgia school over five years will not receive any jail time for her crime.

Authorities initially arrested Watts in January 2014 when a fellow cafeteria worker exposed Watts’ scheme. Authorities estimate Watts raked in $300 a day.

“I saw wrongdoing, so I reported it,” former North Springs High School cafeteria worker Beth Walsh, the employee who exposed the scam, told WSB.

The judge responsible for Watts’ case ordered her to repay the money she stole but did not sentence her to any jail time.

Walsh, who filed a wrongful termination suit against the Fulton County School District, claimed she was fired from her job for exposing the scheme. She later accepted a $50,000 settlement from the school before taking the matter to court.

The Fulton County School District said in a statement that it had instituted tougher record-keeping policies and provided further training to its employees.

Tougher record keeping policies and better employee training? People need to be trained not to steal? Only because taxpayers have to foot the loss. If it was a private business this wouldn't happen.

I have a couple of relatives in prison for doing this to a church where one of them was employed as a bookkeeper. They stole better than $100,000 over a period of about 3 years.

They actually tried to raise “shoddy controls” as a defense.

One got 4 years and the other 7.

Knuckleheads the both of them.

At least they have to pay for their crime so maybe they will learn their lesson.

“At least they have to pay for their crime so maybe they will learn their lesson.”

One would hope. But with these two I seriously doubt it.

“Tougher record keeping policies and better employee training? People need to be trained not to steal?”

This one got caught. She obviously needs more training.

Fulton County is a sewer at every level of government.

No wonder multiple communities in Fulton attempt to escape via incorporation and the Vincent Fort’s of iron-fisted governance use their own (tax payer) money to sue them back into the plantation.

“People need to be trained not to steal?”

It’s not for the thieves. The others need to have ‘sensitivity training’ - including being taught what will happen to whistle-blowers.

“the 300,000 will never be paid back.”

It will when they rip someone else off. They got the original $300K by ripping someone off. If they didn’t need the money they wouldn’t have stolen it unless they are complete idiots. There are legal ways, or foolproof schemes, to make money if you have money. Ask a lawyer.

Usually in cases such as this the payback is done through the county or the state, and if payments are missed..the hammer will strike
Much the same way as alimony payments or child support. The state (as the officiant) administrates those actions.

The only way around it is to go off the grid and hope you don’t reemerge at some point with a minor traffic violation or some other minor offense, after which you would be tossed into jail. consequently, Define would be stalled but interest compounded daily or monthly would be levied on the total amount you spent in jail until you were able to resume payments and the final computations would reflect not only the money owed but also the interest owed. I believe the state keeps the interest owed but I am not sure of that particular point.

And the whistleblower employee got fired and only 50K compensation. Crime does pay!

The money will be forgotten and she will probably get another job like this one. Remember, she wasn’t stealing money from The People so it really isn’t a crime.

We had the same thing happen here and we didn’t find out until the perp died. The stealing is hidden by The Welfare and the virtue signaling of feeding neglected kids.

Taxpayers’ money is nobody’s money, so when a government worker steals it, there are no consequences.
