Box Office: 'Solo: A Star Wars Story' Plunges 77% For $8M Friday
Forbes ^ | 2 June 2018 | Scott mendelson

...All due respect, Solo: A Star Wars Story is not giving audiences everything they ever want, everything they ever need, right in front of them.

...Walt Disney and Lucasfilm’s ill-advised and ill-fated Han Solo prequel flick earned just $8.153 million on its second Friday of domestic release. That’s a huge 77.2% drop from its not-great $35.6m Friday (which included $14.1m in Thursday previews) and it gives the film just $127.745m in eight days of domestic release.

..That’s a slightly larger drop than the 76% Friday-to-Friday fall of The Last Jedi, and this Star Wars story won’t have two weeks of “Christmas-to-New Year’s” holiday play to boost those numbers. ...The film should earn $28m over the weekend for a grisly 67% drop and a mere $148m ten-day total.

...If those lesser figures come to pass, Solo: A Star Wars Story will be the lowest-grossing live-action theatrical Star Wars movie ever, without even factoring inflation. In their original releases, Empire Strikes Strike earned $209 million domestic in 1980 and Return of the Jedi earned $252m in 1983. Heck, the Star Wars: Special Edition release earned $135m in 1997, which would be around $275m today.

I hope it sinks further. hitting Disney in the wallet is the only way to make it understand how badly it screwed up the Star Wars brand

Well, that’s a shame. I hate when bad things happen to Hollywood. After all, they do so much for us.

Kathleen Kennedy is the worst thing to happen to Star Wars.

Not even Jar Jar, midichlorians and the Holiday Special COMBINED has wrought as much destruction as she has.

The higher execs must remove her, preferably by the end of the week.

It’s been screwed up since 1999.

IIRC, she’s basically termination proof. She’s very proud of the fact that she got her start in Hollywood due to winning a Title IX suit, IIRC.

What Disney should do (but won’t) is relocate her to being the producer of awful direct-to-video C-movie garbage, since they can’t fire her.

I hear they’re going to be charging $1,000 a day for the “Star Wars Experience” at the two major parks starting next year. They’ll be fine.

It’s been screwed up since they introduced Teddy bears.

George Lucas was right in not overdoing it. After the next main Star Wars movie, give it a rest for about ten years.

They, as in Disney, will be fine - they have the MCU and other smash hits. But they want to keep the money rolling in. And the setback will make them rethink what they are doing to Star Wars. It's not so much about Solo, which is a bland movie, not a terrible one, like "the Last Jedi" but to send Disney a message that they can't expect a continuous gravy train.

i'm sure they will take heed, not for moral but for sound financial reasons.

it's not about overdoing it -- look at the MCU. There are lots of wonderful stories out there in the Star Wars universe that they could make into good movies - look at Rogue One.

My issue is that they took the money for granted - if they had spent on a good story in TFA or TLJ, they would have made movies that lasted.

That’s what happens when you tell your core demographic and most loyal fans to FO. Strange how that works, huh Kathleen Kennedy?

yup, exactly. For blockbusters catering to the teen, young adult and even older folks, the MCU is great. For Star Wars, they could have cut down on the budget Sci-fi and returned to what makes it memorable - simple space-opera themes

You can thank Mark Hamill for helping kill-off this franchise.

He told Trump supporters not to go to see Star Wars movies.

This is what happens when too many people pay attention to online hype instead of thinking for themselves.

Its a GREAT movie, seen it twice. Everyone I know who saw it loved it.

Lucas screwed up the franchise in episodes 1,2,3. Pure crap. So far Disney hasn’t done much better. Though Rogue one was excellent. I haven’t seen Solo yet by my grown son said it’s good. We’ll see.

I read a thread over the weekend where there were a few Freepers who were of the opinion that the movie wasn't as bad as it was made out to be.

That may well be true, but it is also true there are many people who aren't interested in the movie/subject, and either don't care or actively want to see it fail. I don't condemn those people for liking it, but the subject did make me examine the roots of those who actively enjoy seeing it fail, and I find that many more of us have two factors that bear on it for us:

1.) We don't care, because we lost interest in the "Star Wars Brand" a long time ago. We watched the first one, and thought it was okay because it was somewhat new and different, but after the second one, weren't all that interested anymore.

2.) Disney and "The Star Wars Brand" are interested in pushing social justice issues, and we want to see them both fail.

Personally, I am a little of the first, and more of the second these days.

We see that dynamic in many facets on FR, things like NFL, television, newspapers, etc.
