MARION, Ind. -- The Marion Community Schools board president has stepped down from her position following backlash over a post that she shared on her personal social media page in support of actress Roseanne Barr.
Cathy Mortiz emailed her resignation to the rest of the board on Thursday saying "I am sorry for the message that was conveyed"
In the message, Moritz said she plans to serve out her elected tenure and use her situation as a "learning opportunity" for herself and the community.
"For the integrity of this board and out of love for this community, I am stepping down from my position as president of the Marion Community Schools Board of Trustees.
As I have said before, I am sorry for the message that was conveyed.
I plan to serve out my elected tenure, and I am committed to working with my fellow board members and the community, including the local NAACP, to make this a learning opportunity for myself as well as the community."
According to the Chronicle Tribune, Cathy Moritz' issued an apology Wednesday on her Facebook after sharing a meme posted by a page called "Conservative Women" that showed a photo of the actress and the words: "We stand with Roseanne. Share if you do too."

I lived those days and everybody was was compared to apes and monkeys. Even me because of my build. Grow up.
My nickname was Money Man, because I had a squirrel monkey. However, it is not the same, because blacks were often said to look like monkeys, apes and other ape like creatures. It was not done in a playful manner. There is a legitimate case for their being upset. Not a case of my growing up at all. Rather just recognizing and accepting the facts that comparing them to apes & other primates is not done as a playful thing, but a hurtful thing.
