White Americans are increasingly critical of the country’s social safety net, a new study suggests, thanks in part to a rising tide of racial resentment.
The study, conducted by researchers at two California universities and published Wednesday in the journal Social Forces, finds that opposition to welfare programs has grown among white Americans since 2008, even when controlling for political views and socioeconomic status.
White Americans are more likely to favor welfare cuts when they believe that their status is threatened and that minorities are the main beneficiaries of safety net programs, the study says.
The findings suggest that political efforts to cut welfare programs are driven less by conservative principles than by racial anxiety, the authors conclude. T hat also hurts white Americans who make up the largest share of Medicaid and food-stamp recipients. President Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans have proposed deep cuts to both programs.
“I think our research is very relevant to politics,” said Rachel Wetts, a doctoral candidate in sociology at UC Berkeley and the lead author of the new research. “My main hope here is that people take a step back, look at what these sorts of programs do for the poor, and think about what’s driving opposition to them.”
Wetts and her co-author, Stanford University sociologist Robb Willer, conducted three separate experiments designed to gauge white Americans’ attitudes toward welfare and the factors that influenced them.
In the first, the researchers analyzed 10 years of nationally representative survey data on attitudes toward race and welfare programs. Between 2008 and 2012 in particular, they found, opposition to welfare rose among all Americans -- but far more sharply among whites, who also began scoring higher on racial resentment scales during that period.

Our welfare systems are nothing more than a system for producing vicious bastards who vote Democrat. Taxpayers pay to see a murderous mob on a rampage every night. In Chicago 8-10 people are murdered every weekend. I would say that 80%+ of the killers are from welfare families.
Exactly. It doesn't matter who it helps; it takes money away from me and my family.
It was actually harder getting off the program than on it. They wanted proof of income from my new job (which pays better) before they would take us off. The confirming letter didn't even cite the income ineligibility, it listed us as declining benefits. I guess there is some stigma associated with taking people off food stamps and some incentive for signing new people up.

That is the size of the national debt.
I think the wrong thinking about welfare cuts is demonstrated by Ryan vs Trump.
Ryan wanted to balance the budget by cutting safety nets and entitlements. Despite high unemployment. Ryan didn’t think about the economy at all. Very narrowly focused and not seeing the big picture.
Trump on the other hand, realized that the economy was in the ditch and that the economy needed help. And if you fix the economy, then you can make good on the entitlement promises and you won’t have to spend as much on the safety nets.
It’s like Ryan wanted to strip the car’s seats out and body off and just leave the frame to make the car easier for the engine. Trump wants to fix the engine.

Maine just asked for community service...found out quickly who needed the safety net and who didn’t. I wonder how many of Somali refugees in Lewiston are in those stats?
In the first three months after Maine’s work policy went into effect, its ABAWD caseload plummeted by nearly 80 percent, falling from 13,332 recipients in December 2014 to 2,678 in March 2015.(info from Maine Health and Human Resources)
I too am sick of it.
Anecdote: In a tiny Michigan village where my parents were born and raised a young woman moved into the house across the street. This was around the time I graduated high school and left for the Air force.
Over the years that woman never worked more than a part-time job and the jobs she had never lasted more than a year or two. When the state forced in work requirement she did the minimum required to keep her welfare and free healthcare. My parents helped her out some so she hung around and made nice to them.
The state ended up paying for her house (she is the actual owner, not the state) and many improvements over the years. She has learned how to get everything free via our taxes.
Her two spawn (sons) are now older, with children, and both on welfare and scamming the government for everything just like their mother.
