HAMILTON Johnny Manziel is expected to make his CFL debut on Friday night in the Ticats pre-season opener, Head Coach June Jones revealed Monday.
Jones told reporters after a hot, humid session Monday that Manziel will be second in line for reps on Friday following starting quarterback Jeremiah Masoli.
The Ticats open their pre-season schedule at Tim Hortons Field vs. the Toronto Argonauts.
Jones noted Manziel has made strides since signing with the team on May 19, the day before the start of training camp.
Hes starting to ask the right questions and hes seeing the right things, Jones said Monday. Hes getting a lot of reps both out here and in the virtual reality part of it. Hes staying plugged in, hes going to be OK.
Mondays news comes a day after Steve Milton of 3 Down Nation reported that Vernon Adams Jr., whos battling to be the backup for Masoli, was sidelined from practice. Jones said to Milton at the time about Manziel that obviously hes going to get more reps.
While Adams injury doesnt appear to be serious Jones says he may be ready to go on Tuesday he did not participate in Mondays session.
It was already assumed that Manziel would get to play Friday when the Ticats open their pre-season schedule against the Toronto Argonauts in Hamilton. But depending on Adams status, Manziel may see even more time on the field.
Masolis time on the field in Fridays game is expected to be brief, while Jones says he hopes to make things as easy as possible for Manziel in his first chance to play. I dont want to put him in the game and have him not know exactly where everybodys going to be, and that comes from repetition, said Jones. Hes not all the way caught up where Jeremiah is.
I want him to do things he knows, he added. Im going to get a list from him of the things hes comfortable with and those will be the things he does.
Manziel, 25, signed with the Ticats on May 19 after nearly a year of speculation. The former Heisman Trophy winner with Texas A&M was considered one of the biggest stars college football has ever seen, eventually becoming a first round pick by the NFLs Cleveland Browns.
So far the Tyler, Texas native has dominated much of the discussion throughout the first week of CFL training camps.
Jones has not made it clear how playing time will be distributed on Friday night.
Also in the fold for the Ticats are Dane Evans and Bryant Moniz.
He’s got talent. He was riveting to watch in college. I hope he succeeds.
The CFL?
(snort)
What is the over/under on when he gets dismissed from this league?
It's football in June/July played in a stadium on grass.
Fun to watch especially if you're already burning out on baseball.
Is he truly clean and sober?
I bet Cleveland doesn’t look so bad to him now...........................
Manziel's CFL contract: $122k base, $10k sign bonus, $18k housing stipend, $10k if active 6 games, $10k for 10 games active. $10k for 14 games active. Another $120k if plays half of snaps. March 1 $75k offseason bonus. 2018 $202k base w/same incentives
On the other hand, it's NOT the Cleveland Browns...
Those are Canadian dollars?.....................
And his agent gets to wet his beak too.
These are the different rules, Johnny, put that cheerleader down and listen ...
(a) three downs instead of four.
(b) field is ten yards longer.
(c) you can score a single point with a punt or field goal that is not returned out of the end zone
(d) you have to say “sorry” if anyone gets hurt
(e) nobody over 300 pounds
(f) we keep playing late season games until polar bears have eaten the last man on the field.
(g) sorry.
Canadians are always dreaming up a lotta ways to ruin our lives. The metric system, for the love of God! Celsius! Neil Young! But they did us a favor taking Johnny. May the keep him.
Refreshingly simple uniforms. Do the job without looking like strippers.
Clear your schedules for CFL preseason football!
(at least you know nobody will be kneeling for the
Star Spangled Banner)
They don’t?......................
I envy a country where ‘diversity’ means an Asian chick on the cheerleader squad.

None of the pre-season will make the ESPN broadcast schedule.
Most of the games you’ll have to stream through the ESPN+ app.
I’ll tame two and call you in the morning.
If I’m still alive.
