The Congregational Church has retrogressed a long way since the days when its members were known as Puritans.
No doubt the hard working men and women of the Oakland Police Department appreciate this new policy by these nut jobs. I imagine Officers from Oakland PD would gladly help them remove the 9 and 1 buttons from all their phones, less problems for them.
It actually wouldn’t be a bad experiment if undertaken by serious people rather than these idiots.
I don’t think we should take it at all for granted that instituting full-time, armed, uniformed police forces is necessarily the best way to enforce the law and maintain public order and safety in a free society. The Founding Fathers would probably be aghast at modern police forces—they certainly look a lot like standing armies, which most early bills of rights described as “dangerous to liberty” and provided that they “ought not to be kept up,” particularly when they are used to enforce civil order during peacetime.
They seem anxious to get back to a state of nature. My guess is it will be more Hobbesian than Rousseauian.
Okay, so let's take a quick peek at the majority-black areas of the country where people aren't so quick to call the police... Detroit, Baltimore, Oakland, St Louis...
Gee... let's see... a few butt-hurt professional complainers getting noisy, or an urban decaying wasteland... which one do I want for my community.... hmmmmmmmmmmm. I think I'll choose......

I await the testing of similar ideas. (Maybe they'll invoke the exception for whatever is "life-threatening" when they see anything that looks vaguely racist.)

I don’t live in Oakland, but this person has a point.
They’ve militarized, and they’ve been criminalizing average otherwise law-abiding citizens to rack up fines that go to fund their pensions. They are driven to do so by their bosses.
When you ACTUALLY need them, they’re not around, which means you better be packing.
If more people were armed, and there were fewer police who were more helpful than revenue enhancing, then we’d like have a lower crime rate.
Oh, and if they actually enforce vagrancy, immigration, and drug use laws, then we’d REALLY be in pretty good shape.
They said in the article that many purses and pocketbooks have been stolen. But that they hope they can get justice by talking to the community they are in.
