The Amazing Psychology of Japanese Train Stations

... Japanese rail system occasionally becomes the focus of international headlines—as on May 11, when West Japan Railways issued a florid apology after one of its commuter trains left the station 25 seconds early....

The orderliness of society is taken as a given—Japanese commuters know how to queue on an escalator and can easily navigate the confusing, but wide-open, spaces of Tokyo’s rail stations without assistance. This allows rail operators to instead focus on deeper psychological manipulation.

Operating on the theory that exposure to blue light has a calming effect on one’s mood, rail stations in Japan began installing these LED panels as a suicide-prevention measure in 2009.

Commuting during rush hour in Japan is not for the faint of heart. The trains are jam-packed at as much as 200 percent capacity

... train stations deploy ultrasonic deterrents—small, unobtrusive devices that emit a high-frequency tone. .. generally only be heard by those under the age of 25

When I was very young the streetlights in our backward town were bulbs on a reflector that emitted a yellow light.

the next lights were blue sort of florescent sealed lights

Then the abominable pink ones

Now the white ones that are so grim.

The LED bulbs aren’t a single light (or light source) either. It is distinctly multiple lights.

When you see a shadow on the ground from a street light, you’ll see multiple shadows (of tree leaves or even your own shadow). You may even see the shadow of a grid-like patterned grating over the lights.

It all looks chaotic and schizophrenic to me.

Others write how it seems institutional (like a guard’s watchtower over a prison yard).

And at a concert in a club setting, you’ll see alternating blue and red bulbs each of which casts a distinct light on the singer. It looks like bad 3-D.

I like softer lighting sources with more ambiance.

Are you so naive not to know and understand that there are nuts and weirdos EVERYWHERE? And even if there were none at all there, a little kid could still easily get into trouble travelling around by him/herself.

At home I use incandescent bulbs of diminishing wattage.

Blue light isn’t the best for skin complextions. Amber is. It makes almost anyone appear more attractive. Blue light, in that regard, is a bit harsh, as would be most other colored lighting.

There certainly are a lot of nuts and weirdos here, our system is set up to coddle and encourage them at every turn and every level.

We celebrate the clinton blow job, the Weinstein casting couch, the Epstein fun flights. We wink when boys will be boys, and never train them to be men. We vociferously defend MS-13, cram terrorist inculcated "refugees" into middle America. Release violent psychotics from institutions and dump them untreated on our streets. We look the other way when women are being harassed. Compare that to post 15, can you imagine any subway riders in this country lifting a finger?

Nuts and weirdos are only EVERYWHERE when they are tolerated ANYWHERE. In Japan they are ostracized, beaten, (see post 37, imagine the fake outrage if a cop beat down a pickpocket here!) or removed from society by the mental health or prison system.

Maybe you like living in a society that celebrates perversion? (Not that there's anything wrong with that!). But if you do, the cost of that is having freaks, nuts and weirdos EVERYWHERE. Enjoy!

BTW, did you see post 9?

What happens when someone asks a Japanese kid ‘where are your parents?’

Do the adults in the area ignore it?

No. The police show up. Here the police can’t even be bothered to take a report from a bloodied mugging victim.

How in hell did you arrive at such a stupid conclusion? Of course it would be great if we could trust every total stranger with our children. But it's a fantasy. A very dangerous one.
