Box Office: 'Solo: A Star Wars Story' Bombs With $148M Global Weekend
Forbes ^ | May 27, 2018 | Scott Mendelson

Walt Disney and Lucasfilm’s Solo: A Star Wars Story performed at near-worst-case scenario levels this Memorial Day weekend. The film opened with a soft-ish $35.6 million on Friday, including $14m in Thursday previews, before comparatively cratering over the holiday for an $83.3m Fri-Sun and projected $101m Fri-Mon frame. That’s a weak 2.83x four-day weekend multiplier, on par with Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2.73x in 2007) and X-Men: The Last Stand (2.71x in 2006). That wouldn’t be a problem if the overall numbers were bigger, as X-Men 3 and Pirates 3 both set Memorial Day records. Solo did not set any (positive) records.

But when your $250-$300 million (thanks to reshoots) sci-fi prequel opens with $101m over four days with a lower weekend multiplier than X-Men: Apocalypse, with awful overseas numbers to boot, the odds are beyond grim. Yes, the reviews are decent and the next two weeks are relatively vacant. But even and arguable best-case-scenario of a 2.5x multiplier (think Men in Black 3 in 2012) gives the Ron Howard-directed film a domestic total just over/under the $248m debut weekend of The Force Awakens.

And there is plenty of precedent for a much-grimmer outcome. That weekend multiplier is terrifying because there are plenty of big Memorial Day releases (the third and fifth Pirates movies, the last three ensemble X-Men flicks, Day After Tomorrow or Fast and Furious 6) that barely earned over/under 2x their four-day gross over their entire domestic run. Yes, there is math that argues that Solo: A Star Wars Story may end up essentially earning about what The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($202 million) or Godzilla ($200m) did in 2014. And unlike those franchises, Lucasfilm can’t count on an overseas bailout.

If you want to blame someone for “ruining everything” - blame Kathleen Kennedy.

I wonder what is wrong with it besides the homosexuality factor. It can’t be all that.

This is more about The Last Jedi than the Han Solo film itself.

Wayyy to much being read into it, mostly by LGBT folks looking for heroes and on the other end far too sensitive conservatives looking for offenses.

That was directly from the writer himself, Jon Kasdan, who after receiving criticism for it took to twitter and insulted fans and admitted they were pursuing a Leftist political agenda. You can look it up.

But in any event, the low ticket sales are due to The Last Jedi - compounded by the multiple insults hurled at fans by Kasdan, Rian Johnson and their allies since that time.

And some get reborn. Rocky 1,2,3 were great. 4 and 5 were middling to bad. But 6 = Rocky Balboa was superb. And Creed was very good as well.

To clarify, I haven't seen Solo and am not planning on it. I just find how Disney is (mis)handling Star Wars and the response to it really interesting.

With regards to Lando's supposed pan sexuality, BOOFIRE191 asks "Star Wars Solo: Is L3-37 A Parody of Kathleen Kennedy?" He argues that the original directors, Philip Lord and Christopher Miller, were fired because L3-37, Lando's android sidekick, is a parody of social justice warriors and Kathleen Kennedy. If it wasn't for John Kasdan saying Lando was pan sexual right before Solo opened, no one would think or talk about it.

It is eleven minutes long and has some swearing. His mini rants on real world SJWs are spot on. Even if Kasdan was just trying to rile people, it was still irresponsible of him to say something that could turn people away a week before Solo opened. More so when he obviously knows a lot of fans are still upset with Disney over The Last Jedi.

John Wayne. Ward Bond. Clint Walker. Claude Akins. Lee Marvin. Chuck Conners. James Garner. Steve McQueen. James Arness. Gregory Peck. Cary Grant. James Stewart. Robert Mitchum. Burt Lancaster.

A-list or B-list, they were real men playing real men. They were bigger than life. Now they are smaller than life.

Now we have, at best, Rock Hudson, and at worst, Montgomery Clift, as leading men.

There are a few exceptions: Hugh Jackman. Chris Pratt.

Don’t forget Clint Eastwood, that guy definitely was manly and promoted conservativism.
