Walt Disney and Lucasfilms Solo: A Star Wars Story performed at near-worst-case scenario levels this Memorial Day weekend. The film opened with a soft-ish $35.6 million on Friday, including $14m in Thursday previews, before comparatively cratering over the holiday for an $83.3m Fri-Sun and projected $101m Fri-Mon frame. Thats a weak 2.83x four-day weekend multiplier, on par with Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End (2.73x in 2007) and X-Men: The Last Stand (2.71x in 2006). That wouldnt be a problem if the overall numbers were bigger, as X-Men 3 and Pirates 3 both set Memorial Day records. Solo did not set any (positive) records.
But when your $250-$300 million (thanks to reshoots) sci-fi prequel opens with $101m over four days with a lower weekend multiplier than X-Men: Apocalypse, with awful overseas numbers to boot, the odds are beyond grim. Yes, the reviews are decent and the next two weeks are relatively vacant. But even and arguable best-case-scenario of a 2.5x multiplier (think Men in Black 3 in 2012) gives the Ron Howard-directed film a domestic total just over/under the $248m debut weekend of The Force Awakens.
And there is plenty of precedent for a much-grimmer outcome. That weekend multiplier is terrifying because there are plenty of big Memorial Day releases (the third and fifth Pirates movies, the last three ensemble X-Men flicks, Day After Tomorrow or Fast and Furious 6) that barely earned over/under 2x their four-day gross over their entire domestic run. Yes, there is math that argues that Solo: A Star Wars Story may end up essentially earning about what The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($202 million) or Godzilla ($200m) did in 2014. And unlike those franchises, Lucasfilm cant count on an overseas bailout.

The FEMALE VOICED droid?
What nonsense.
Easy fix for Disney, just create a story with a time device and change everything to an alternate storyline.
Just like they did with Star Trek.
I thought that was a quote from Spaceballs. Along with the closing; "Spaceballs 2; the search for more money."
Or Old Yeller, Treasure Island, Swiss Family Robinson, etc.
Quote: what nonsense
I agree, it was nonsense. The movie was somewhat entertaining but I stand by my screed. The alpha male characters were neutered. And who should come out at the end as the crime boss? Why, a woman. And who leads the rebel pack? Why, a woman. Why must Disney reimagine the original to make the men less manly and women more so?
Sorry, it may not be transsexual but at this point the girl power stuff sure is transparent and getting old.
I haven’t seen the movie, but the origin of Lando’s sexual deviancy was the film’s writer Jonathan Kasdan. He labeled Lando a pansexual.
Yeah, those too (well, I can say Old Yeller’s somewhat good, even if the dog does end up dying from rabies and being shot. I can’t speak for Treasure Island and Swiss Family Robinson since I never saw them).
Pretty much the movies I grew up on as my parents got those from the library. Treasure Island was a decent adaptation of the novel and Swiss Family Robinson was abridged and they had one fewer son in the family than the novel, but still an enjoyable adventure film.
No, she was an agent for the Empire, for the Sith to be precise. She's in no way a boss - she does as she's told.
Sorry, it may not be transsexual
You're right. Nothing transsexual in it at all.
Or just make Star Wars set aside in a totally different era of the fictional Star WARS history altogether. I mean, Obi-Wan Kenobi stated that the Jedi Knights were around for 1000 generations, or around 25 to 30 thousand years, before the galactic empire.
Sorry, but Darth Maul is no longer a Sith. Disney kept the canon of the cartoon series Rebels and Clone Wars. Maul becomes a crime Lord as a way to gain moola and influence to get his revenge on Sidius and his other enemies. So yes, the woman does become a crime over one of his many sydicates.
BTW, Maul finally finds one of his targets hiding on Tatooine. Said Target, Obi Wan puts a quick end to him:
The first three were outstanding.I have no use for any of the others.
Got some bad information on the movie (thanks to Hollywood I believed without checking.) Many people have set me “straight” since then! But thanks!
This has been going on for the last five months. I think there is a unoffical boycott because fans are fed up with the abuse. So fans are sending a message to Disney by not buy tickets or merchandise.
That is pretty mind boggling. Insulting paying customers is just really bad business. I’m really surprised how much they attacked the fans. That’s pathetic.
There was no homosexuality factor. It is, in fact, a terrific film.
The actor who portrays Han Solo just does not have that spark you need.
BTW : ) In an earlier edit Chewie pulls the arm out of Han Solo socket but the producer did not like it as much as the test audiences who loved it.
#16 Howard Hawks quote:
Most of the leading men today, the younger men especially, are a little bit effeminate. There’s no toughness. [Steve McQueen] and [Clint Eastwood] don’t compare with [John Wayne].
The legacy of The Last Jedi, which demoralized the fan base. Doing something like that with a franchise like Star Wars is no small accomplishment, but they managed to do it.
